Chapter 5 - The Lullaby They Remembered

By the third day, the Voss estate had transformed into something unrecognizable to its staff.

The quiet, museum-like halls now echoed with the chaotic sounds of pitter-patter feet, tumbling wooden blocks, and bright, squealing laughter.

Elena had refused to stay in the guest suit Caden had assigned her. Instead, she had moved a simple armchair into the main nursery, sleeping beside the cribs, waking up every time one of the triplets shifted in their sleep. The exhaustion under her eyes was heavy, but for the first time in over a year, the hollow ache in her chest had been replaced by an overwhelming, fierce warmth.

She was currently sitting on the plush rug in the sunlit living room, building a clumsy wooden tower with Leo while Mia attempted to feed a plastic carrot to a giant stuffed bear. Noah was sitting directly in Elena's lap, his small head resting securely against her collarbone.

From the second-floor balcony overlooking the living room, Caden stood silently, watching.

He had spent seventy-two hours on his secure satellite phone, coordinating with his legal teams, his financial auditors, and his street captains. The city was quietly shifting beneath his feet. The Moretti family had realized Dr. Sterling was missing, and rumors were already circulating through the eastern docks that Caden Voss had brought a strange woman into his fortress.

Ortega stepped onto the balcony beside Caden, holding a leather folder.

"Boss," Ortega reported in a low voice. "Don Moretti has called an emergency council meeting of the five Families for Friday night. He’s claiming you breached the peace treaty by detaining Sterling."

"Let him claim whatever he wants," Caden murmured, his eyes never leaving Elena as she burst into a soft, genuine laugh when Leo knocked the wooden tower over.

It was a sound Caden realized he had never heard inside this house. Not during his marriage to Isabella, which had been a cold, political arrangement orchestrated by their fathers. Not during the fourteen months since the children were born.

"There's something else," Ortega added, opening the folder. "We pulled the old audio files from the Apex clinic security servers before we burned their database. Fourteen months ago, during the surrogate implantation phase, Miss Vance spent twenty minutes every afternoon in the recovery room."

Caden turned his head slightly. "Doing what?"

"Singing," Ortega said, handing Caden an audio earpiece. "The clinic notes stated she insisted on singing to her belly every day before she left. Sterling thought it was sentimental nonsense."

Caden took the earpiece and placed it in his ear.

A quiet, scratchy recording played through the speaker. A younger, softer version of Elena’s voice began to sing a slow, old-fashioned Irish lullaby—a gentle tune about golden horses and silver moons, the rhythm steady and sweet.

Down in the living room below, Leo suddenly threw his wooden block, stood up on his wobbly legs, and began to whimper. Mia dropped her plastic carrot, her small face scrunching up as a thunderstorm of toddler frustration brewed.

Elena didn't scold them. She simply leaned back against the sofa, gathered Noah tighter, and began to sing.

“Where the mountain meets the sea, Sleep, my little darlings, soft and free. Golden horses run the tide, With your mama by your side…”

The effect was instantaneous.

Down on the floor, Leo stopped mid-whimper. His tiny mouth opened slightly. Mia sat down hard on her diaper, her hazel eyes locking onto Elena’s lips. Both children began to sway softly to the rhythm, their tears evaporating like dew under the morning sun.

On the balcony above, Caden felt something heavy and calcified inside his chest crack wide open.

He took off the earpiece and handed it back to Ortega.

"Cancel my afternoon meetings," Caden said quietly.

"Boss?"

"Tell the council I will attend Don Moretti's meeting on Friday," Caden said, his voice turning to steel as he walked toward the balcony stairs. "And tell my tailors to prepare a dress for Miss Vance. She will be attending beside me."

Ortega blinked in rare surprise. "You're introducing her to the Families? Boss, Moretti will see that as a declaration of war."

Caden descended the stairs, his eyes fixed on the woman singing in his living room.

"Good," Caden said. "I've been waiting for a reason to burn his house down anyway."
