Chapter 9 - The Trial of Caden Voss

Three weeks later, the storm that had hovered over the Voss family had completely cleared.
The Moretti empire had dissolved under federal indictments and economic pressure, its remaining captains absorbed into Caden’s clean, restructured shipping logistics firm. The eastern docks were quieter, safer, and more profitable than they had been in thirty years.
In the grand conservatory of the Voss estate, sunlight poured through the towering glass walls, illuminating a scene that would have seemed impossible a month prior.
A small wooden altar had been decorated with white roses and eucalyptus leaves.
Standing before a federal judge—the very judge whose mortgage Caden had legally paid off years ago—stood Caden and Elena.
There were no media cameras, no crime syndicate bosses, no dark shadows. Only Ortega standing as best man, holding a velvet ring box, and three toddler-sized chairs set up in the front row.
Leo, Noah, and Mia were dressed in matching miniature suits and a tiny white dress, sitting quietly—a minor miracle—watching their parents with wide, bright hazel eyes.
"By the authority vested in me by the state," the judge intoned with a warm, genuine smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Caden, you may kiss your bride."
Caden turned to Elena.
She looked radiant in a simple, elegant ivory silk gown, her eyes shining with tears of pure, unbroken joy.
Caden didn't just kiss her; he pulled her close, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, lifting her an inch off the floor as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, fierce, and desperate promise that sealed their past and their future together.
Down in the front row, Mia let out a loud, happy squeal, clapping her small hands together.
"Mama! Papa!"
Caden broke the kiss, laughing softly—a deep, booming sound that warmed the entire glass room—as he lowered Elena back down.
They turned together to pick up their children. Caden gathered Leo and Noah into his broad arms, while Elena lifted Mia against her hip, the small girl instantly burying her face into Elena's neck, breathing in the scent of peaches and sweet lotion.

"You built a fortress," Elena whispered to Caden as they stood together looking out over the shining ocean below their estate.
"No," Caden corrected, reaching out to lace his fingers through hers, his gold wedding band gleaming in the sunlight. "I built walls. You brought the life inside them."
