Chapter 8 - Fire at the Eastern Port

Friday night brought an eerie, windless calm over the city harbor.

The Grand Council of the Five Families was held at the Obsidian Club—a private, subterranean lounge built beneath the historic waterfront district, accessible only by private elevators guarded by armed sentries from all factions.

The massive oak table in the center of the main room was lit by low-hanging crystal lamps. Seated around it were the heads of the city's crime syndicates—old men in expensive suits, surrounded by their captains.

At the head of the table sat Don Vincent Moretti—a withered, sharp-eyed man of seventy with silver hair, a gold-headed cane, and a face carved from eighty years of pure malice.

The heavy brass doors swung open.

Caden Voss entered first. He looked majestic and terrifying in a bespoke midnight-blue tux, his posture radiating absolute dominance.

And at his side, her arm tucked securely into his, walked Elena Vance.

She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that hugged her curves, her dark hair styled in elegant waves over one shoulder, a diamond necklace glittering against her collarbone—a gift Caden had placed around her neck himself an hour ago. She walked with her head held high, her gaze sweeping across the powerful men in the room without a single trace of fear.

A sharp murmur rippled through the council.

Don Moretti’s hand tightened around his gold cane until his knuckles turned white. He stood up slowly, his old eyes locking onto Elena with a mixture of shock and rage.

"Caden," Moretti growled, his voice like grinding stones. "What is the meaning of this insult? You bring a nameless street woman to a sacred council of the Families?"

Caden led Elena to the empty high-backed leather chair at the head of the table, pulling it out for her himself before taking his seat beside her.

"Nameless?" Caden repeated, his voice echoing through the silent, tense room. "Allow me to introduce her, Vincent. This is Elena Voss. The mother of my children. The biological and legal matriarch of the Voss estate."

The room went dead silent.

"Lies!" Moretti barked, slamming his cane against the floorboards. "Her children died at birth! She signed the releases at St. Augustine’s! She has no standing here!"

"She signed forged documents under duress while being lied to by a doctor you paid," Elena spoke up, her voice cutting through the room with startling clarity and power.

She reached into her small silk clutch, pulled out a stack of authenticated legal documents and forensic blood test results, and slammed them down on the mahogany table in front of the assembled bosses.

"My children are alive," Elena declared, staring Don Moretti directly in his black eyes. "Their DNA matches mine 99.9%. And every asset your family tried to steal through forged guardianship papers has been permanently blocked by federal court injunctions filed two hours ago."

Moretti’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. He reached toward his jacket pocket—

CLICK.

Before his hand could reach his lapel, Caden had his sidearm drawn, resting the cold steel barrel flat on the table, pointed directly at Moretti’s chest.

"Touch that coat, Vincent," Caden said softly, "and I’ll paint this mahogany with your blood before your guards can clear their holsters."

The other family bosses in the room remained completely still, none of them willing to move a muscle in the presence of Caden’s unleashed fury.

"You stole fourteen months of my children's lives," Caden said, his dark eyes locked onto the old Don. "You lied to their mother. You paid low-life scum to keep her starving in an alley. Effective midnight tonight, the Voss enterprise absorbs all Moretti shipping routes at the eastern port. If you object, my men burn your warehouses to the ground by dawn."

Moretti looked around the room, searching the faces of his fellow bosses for support. But seeing the undeniable DNA evidence, the legal injunctions, and the absolute lethal readiness of Caden Voss, every single boss looked away, abandoning the old man to his fate.

Moretti slowly lowered his hand, trembling with defeated rage. "You... you can't do this..."

"I already have," Caden said.

He stood up, offered his arm to Elena, and smiled down at her with a warmth that left the room stunned.

"Come, my love," Caden whispered softly. "Our children are waiting for their bedtime story."
