Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The fallout back in the city was catastrophic.

Within forty-eight hours, the news of Marcus’s infertility had leaked. It was the kind of scandal that didn't just ruin a reputation; it dismantled a social order. His business associates, who had invested in his "family-oriented, legacy-building" brand, were scrambling.

But the real trouble for Marcus started when the tax authorities arrived.

He sat in his office—a space that suddenly felt like a tomb—staring at the empty bank accounts on his screen. His phone was ringing incessantly. His mother was refusing to take his calls. His mistress, terrified by the sudden public scrutiny and the realization that the money was gone, had vanished.

He was alone.

He pulled up the photos I had left on his desk—the divorce papers, with a small note on the back: The foundation was rotten, Marcus. You just didn't look down.

He realized then that I had known for years. I had known about the affairs, the infertility, the embezzlement. I had simply been waiting for the exact moment when the blow would hurt the most.

He stood up, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He picked up his glass and hurled it at the wall. It shattered, mirroring the state of his empire.

He grabbed his coat and stormed out of the office. He didn't care about the scandal, the board, or the law anymore. He cared about one thing: finding me. He knew I had taken the children, and he knew that as long as I was out there, living on the money he believed was rightfully his, he was a ghost of a man.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a burner phone—the one he used for his "off-the-books" business associates.

"Find her," he growled into the phone. "I don't care what it costs. Find out where she went, and bring my children back."

He didn't know that the trail I had left was designed to lead him into a labyrinth of his own making. He was hunting a shadow, and he had no idea that I was the one holding the leash.
