Chapter 7 - The Collision

The day he arrived in Lisbon, the sky was a deep, bruised purple, promising a storm.
I was at a site inspection, overseeing the restoration of a historic villa, when I felt it—a shift in the air, a sense of being watched. I stood on the balcony of the unfinished structure, looking down at the narrow cobblestone street. A black sedan was idling near the entrance.
I felt a surge of cold adrenaline. He had come.
I didn't panic. I didn't run. I took my phone and sent a pre-composed message to the contact I had established with the local police.
Five minutes later, Marcus walked onto the site. He looked haggard, his suit rumpled, his eyes bloodshot—a far cry from the man who had sat in that attorney’s office in his perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
"Elena," he said, his voice raw.
"Marcus," I replied, standing my ground. I didn't move away. "You’re a long way from home."
"Where are my children?" he demanded, stepping closer.
"They are safe," I said, my voice steady. "And they are never going back to you."
He laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. "You think you’ve won? You’re a nobody here. A contractor. I can end this career in an afternoon. I can take them from you."
"You can't take what you don't own, Marcus," I said, pointing to the end of the street.
The sound of sirens cut through the air. Marcus turned, his face shifting from rage to confusion. Two police cruisers screeched to a halt at the edge of the site. Four officers stepped out, their presence professional and unrelenting.
"Marcus Thorne?" the lead officer said in broken English. "You are being detained for international financial crimes and harassment charges issued by the jurisdiction of your home country."
Marcus looked at me, his eyes widening as the reality set in. He had come to destroy me, but he had only succeeded in walking directly into the trap I had spent months perfecting.

"You did this," he whispered, his voice trembling.
"No," I said, walking past him as the officers approached. "You did this. I just made sure the path was clear for you to arrive."
