Chapter 8 - The Weight of Truth

The holding cell in Lisbon was a far cry from the opulent offices of the Thorne dynasty. Marcus sat on a cold metal bench, his hands shaking—not from the chill, but from the sudden, jarring loss of his own narrative.

His lawyer—a court-appointed public defender who lacked the bite of his former high-priced counsel—entered with a thick file. "Mr. Thorne, the extradition request is being processed. But there’s a bigger problem. The diagnostic report from the clinic, the one you tried to suppress... it’s been leaked to the global medical board. They aren't just looking at your finances anymore; they are investigating the medical fraud you committed to frame your ex-wife."

Marcus stared at the concrete wall. For years, he had operated on the belief that he could curate reality. If he didn't like a fact, he rewrote it. If he didn't like a person, he erased them. Now, he was being erased.

Across the city, I sat with the lead investigator for the case. We were reviewing the final documents. There was one piece of paper that caught my eye: a letter from the fertility specialist, written years ago, which Marcus had hidden from me. It stated that his condition was genetic and progressive, and that he had known about it since before we married. He had blamed me for our "lack of an heir" to keep me subservient, to keep me feeling "broken" so I would never consider leaving.

The revelation didn't make me cry; it made me breathe. The "defect" he had accused me of having was never mine. The shame he had forced me to carry for a decade was a heavy coat he had sewn for me to wear. I finally took it off.
