Chapter 5 - The Glass House

The trap was elegant in its simplicity. I didn’t need to break into Evan’s office; I just needed to invite him to a meeting he couldn’t refuse. I used the burner phone to send a message from an anonymous "investor" interested in the construction contracts that were, in reality, the heart of his money-laundering operation.

Evan, ever the narcissist, couldn't resist the smell of fresh capital. He agreed to meet at an abandoned industrial warehouse—the very site where his shell company had "planned" a luxury apartment complex that existed only on paper.

I arrived an hour early, wearing a dark coat and carrying a small, nondescript black bag. Marcus waited in the periphery, his camera lens trained on the entrance. My pulse wasn't racing; it was rhythmic, clinical. This was no different than prepping a body for an autopsy. You observe, you document, you reveal the cause of death.

Evan walked in, looking confident, his suit immaculate. "Who are you?" he barked, his voice echoing against the cold concrete. "And why hide in the shadows? I have money, not time."

I stepped into the dim light. His smirk didn't just vanish; it curdled.

"Amelia?" he whispered, his bravado momentarily punctured by genuine confusion. Then, the sneer returned. "You? You’re pathetic. Do you think this changes anything? You’re a disgraced doctor, a hysterical ex-wife, and a ghost. Nobody will believe a word you say."

"I don't need them to believe me, Evan," I said, stepping closer. I pulled out my phone and played a recording—not of him abusing me, but of his mother, Vivian, admitting to the embezzlement during a private phone call I’d bugged weeks ago. "I need them to follow the money."

He lunged at me, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He was counting on my old, conditioned fear. He was waiting for me to scream, to cower, to beg.

I didn't move. I pivoted, using the physics of leverage to side-step him, and in that split second, the warehouse lights flooded on. Marcus and two other detectives stepped out from the shadows.

"Evan Carter," Marcus said, his voice cold. "You’re under arrest for fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."
