Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

The trial was a media circus. Every day, I walked into the courthouse with my head held high, ignoring the cameras, the whispers, and the judgment.

But behind the scenes, the fight was getting ugly. My medical license, which I had fought to protect for years, became the defense's primary target. They hired a team of experts to argue that my forensic knowledge had actually been used to conceal the abuse—a theory so twisted it almost worked.

"They’re trying to turn your own brilliance into a weapon against you," Marcus warned one evening. We were in his office, digging through the original case files from 2018.

"Let them," I said, scanning a page of notes I hadn't looked at in years. "They keep trying to frame me for the 2018 patient incident. They think I was negligent. They don't realize I wasn't being negligent—I was being silenced."

I suddenly stopped, my finger tracing a signature at the bottom of an old hospital report. It wasn't mine. It was the hospital administrator’s, a man who had since been promoted to a lucrative position within a company owned by Vivian Carter.

The pieces clicked. The 2018 incident hadn't been a medical error. It had been a setup, orchestrated years ago to ensure they had control over me before the marriage even began.

"Marcus," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "This wasn't an accident. This was a long-game strategy. They’ve been planning this for years."

I looked at the mountain of evidence we had gathered. We had the fraud, we had the abuse, and now, we had the motive for a systemic, decades-long cover-up.

"We need to bring this to the Judge tomorrow," I said. "Not as a domestic case. As a criminal conspiracy."

The final battle wasn't just for my freedom. It was to expose the entire, rotten infrastructure of their lives. I was ready.
