Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Matriarch

Vivian’s collapse was quieter but infinitely more devastating.
When the news of Evan’s arrest broke, the press didn't just report on the abuse; they tore open the entire Carter dynasty. With Evan in custody, his lawyers abandoned him, and the internal board of the family foundation began to scramble to save their own skins. They needed a scapegoat.

"Amelia," a voice said. It was the lead prosecutor, a woman named Elena who had been quietly building the fraud case for months. "She wants to talk to you. She’s claiming you blackmailed her son into this."
I walked into the interrogation room. Vivian looked up, her eyes narrowing.
"You think you’ve won?" she hissed. "You’re still a nobody. Evan will be out in a month, and he will destroy every last piece of you."
I pulled a chair across from her and sat down, mirroring her classic, condescending pose—the one she used to use during our "tea time" humiliations.

"The difference between us, Vivian, is that I have a foundation of truth," I said calmly. "I spent seven years studying your son's psychology. I know how he breaks under pressure. And I know you, too. I know about the 'useful' people you discarded before me. I’ve reached out to them. They’re all waiting to testify."
Her confidence flickered. For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid. She realized then that I wasn't the timid daughter-in-law anymore. I was the lead investigator of her downfall, and I had the file to prove it.
