Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Truth

Clara sat rigidly on the edge of the living room sofa, her hands wrapped tightly around a mug of warm water I had poured for her. On the coffee table in front of us lay the items I had dragged out of the mattress: the bundles of cash, the blood-stained tennis bracelet, the leather-bound journal, and Elena’s active burner phone.

When Clara’s eyes landed on the bracelet, a sob broke from her throat, and she covered her mouth with both hands.

“That... that was our mother’s bracelet,” she choked out, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Elena never took it off. She wore it every single day.”

“I’m so sorry, Clara,” I murmured, sitting beside her and placing a comforting hand on her trembling shoulder. The grief in her eyes mirrored the raw terror churning in my own stomach. “When I smelled that... that horrible odor in the bedroom for the past three months, I thought it was mold, or plumbing issues. I had no idea what was rotting right under my head.”

“Miguel is a monster,” Clara whispered fiercely, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “He charmed Elena at a corporate gala. He promised her a divorce from you, promised her a future. But when she found out he was lying—when she found out about his financial troubles and his criminal schemes—he silenced her.”

“He told me he was going to Dallas for three days,” I said, my mind racing as the pieces clicked together. “But look at the dates in the journal. Look at the money. He wasn't just hiding evidence; he was waiting for the heat to die down, or planning to move it all out of the state.”

“We need to go to the police right now,” Clara urged, reaching for her phone. “We have the cash, the journal, her phone, the blood evidence. This is enough to put him away for the rest of his life.”

“Wait,” I stopped her, holding up a hand. “If we just walk into a police precinct with this, Miguel has high-priced lawyers, and he’s smart. He’ll claim someone broke into our house, or frame me for it. He’s calculated, Clara. Look at how carefully he hid this right beneath me. He likes control. He likes psychological torture.”

“Then what do we do?” Clara asked, determination hardening her voice. “We can't just let him walk free.”

“We don't,” I said, a cold, steady resolve settling into my chest. “We let him walk right back into the trap he built for himself.”
