Chapter 8 - The Confrontation and the Trap

Before I could react, Miguel lunged forward, grabbing my arm with bone-crushing force and dragging me into the bedroom.

“Let go of me!” I screamed, twisting and fighting against his grip, but his strength was overwhelming.

“Shut up!” Miguel hissed, his face contorted with rage as he shoved me backward onto the bed. I scrambled away, but he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy plastic zip tie—the exact same kind that had bound the bag of money. “I didn't want to do this. I really didn't. But you leave me no choice. Just like Elena.”

He loomed over me, his eyes wild and desperate. “You’ll disappear on a business trip, Ana. Everyone will think you packed your bags and left me out of nowhere. It’s so easy.”

“You think you’re going to get away with this?” I asked, panting for air, my heart hammering furiously, yet my voice holding a strange, chilling calmness. “You think nobody knows you’re here?”

Miguel paused, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. “What are you talking about?”

Suddenly, the bedroom closet door flew wide open.

Clara stepped out into the room, holding her smartphone high in the air. The speaker was turned all the way up, broadcasting the steady, unmistakable hum of a police dispatch line.

“Every single word you just said, Miguel, is being recorded and transmitted directly to the Phoenix Police Department,” Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “They heard everything.”

Miguel’s face drained of all color. He spun around, staring at Clara in sheer horror, realizing too late that he had walked right into a brilliantly executed trap.

For a split second, panic paralyzed him. Then, a desperate, murderous rage took over. He lunged away from me, turning violently toward Clara with his hands outstretched to snatch the phone from her grip.

“No!” I screamed.

Adrenaline surged through my veins. I leaped off the bed, grabbed the heavy ceramic bedside lamp by its base, and swung it with every ounce of strength I had left, smashing it directly across Miguel’s back.

With a muffled groan, Miguel stumbled forward, crashing hard against the bedroom wall before collapsing to the floor.
