Chapter 9 - Sirens in the Desert

Outside the windows, the silent Arizona night suddenly exploded into a kaleidoscope of brilliant red and blue light.

The wailing scream of multiple police cruisers tore through the neighborhood, pulling up directly in front of our house with screeching tires and slamming doors.

“Police! Open the door! Drop your weapons!” a booming voice echoed from the front porch through a megaphone.

Clara rushed to the bedroom window, waving her arms and shouting, “In here! The bedroom window is open! He’s armed and dangerous!”

Before Miguel could even push himself up from the floor, heavy boots thundered down the hallway. The bedroom door was kicked open with a deafening crash, splintering the wood frame. Three armed police officers swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn and tactical flashlights blindingly bright.

“Don’t move! Stay on the ground! Hands behind your back!”

Miguel thrashed wildly for a brief second, trying to reach for his jacket pocket, but an officer pinned him face-down onto the hardwood floor with a knee to his spine, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

“Miguel Reynolds, you are under arrest for the kidnapping and murder of Elena Vance, financial fraud, and domestic assault,” the lead officer barked, hauling him up to his feet.

As they dragged him out of the room, Miguel turned his head, fixing me with a venomous, hateful glare that sent a final shiver down my spine. But I didn't flinch. I stood tall beside Clara, my chin held high, watching him vanish down the hallway he had tried to turn into a graveyard.
