Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Facade

The tension in the Sterling penthouse had become a tangible, suffocating weight. Bennett was fraying at the edges, his movements jerky, his eyes perpetually bloodshot from nights spent pouring over the "irregular" audits I had intentionally leaked to him.
One evening, as I stood in the study reviewing a ledger, Bennett stormed in. He slammed his glass onto the mahogany desk, the amber liquid splashing onto the pristine documents.
"You're doing this!" he accused, his voice booming. "Every time I look at these files, they contradict the previous ones. Who the hell is Thorne Capital, really? You're not fixing my company; you’re dismantling it!"
I didn't blink. I slowly folded the ledger and stood up, smoothing my skirt. I looked at him, not as a consultant, but with the cold, assessing gaze of a woman who had seen men like him collapse a thousand times before. "I am doing exactly what I was hired to do: reveal the truth of your situation, Bennett. If the truth is painful, that is a reflection of your management, not my auditing."
"I should fire you," he hissed, taking a step toward me.
"You can't," I countered, my voice dropping to a dangerous, silky whisper. "Because without my signature on the next liquidity report, your creditors will pull the plug by Monday. You are in a cage of your own making. You thought you could treat a woman like a vessel, treat a life like a commodity, and suffer no consequences? You are naive."
He froze. For a fleeting second, the way I said 'vessel' triggered a flicker of recognition in his eyes. He leaned in, searching my face. "Your voice… the way you look at me… it’s familiar."
I leaned in closer, my face inches from his, my eyes burning with a cold fire he couldn't possibly fathom. "Perhaps you’re just seeing the ghost of the life you threw away. Or perhaps, Bennett, your conscience is finally starting to rot."
Before he could respond, Miranda burst into the room, her face pale. "Bennett! The security firm just called. They said they've been replaced. They said new guards are at the gates—guards with Thorne insignia."

Bennett’s face went white. He turned to me, his hands shaking. "What did you do?"
"I secured the assets," I said calmly. "Including the ones that breathe."
