Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

The city’s annual Charity Gala was the apex of the social calendar. It was the night Bennett had planned to debut his 'perfect' family and launch his new venture. Instead, it became his funeral.

I arrived on the arm of my father, Elias Thorne. The ballroom went silent as we entered. I wore a gown of deep, midnight blue—a contrast to the fragile, nervous girl in the white hospital gown I had been just weeks ago.

Bennett was there, looking disheveled, his tuxedo slightly rumpled. He saw me and froze. When he realized I was with Elias Thorne—the man who effectively owned his debts—the color drained from his face completely.

"Elias," Bennett stammered, stepping forward. "I… I didn't know your daughter was…"

Elias ignored him, turning instead to the crowd. The room was deathly quiet. "Ladies and gentlemen," my father announced, his voice booming across the hall. "I have invited you here to witness the correction of a grave injustice."

He gestured to me. I stepped into the spotlight.

"Bennett Sterling recently attempted to claim a child through deception and coercion," I said, my voice amplified by the gala’s sound system, reaching every corner of the room. "He used a contract signed under duress and physical threats. He believed that by isolating me, he could erase my rights as a mother."

I pulled a document from my clutch—the original birth certificate and a legal override signed by the highest court, fast-tracked by my father’s influence.

"I am the mother of Alicia Sterling," I declared. "And as of this moment, Bennett Sterling has no legal or biological claim to my daughter. Furthermore, his company is currently under receivership by Thorne Enterprises due to massive fraud."

A gasp rippled through the crowd. Cameras flashed. Bennett tried to shout, to protest, but security moved in. He wasn't just being disgraced; he was being served with papers for kidnapping and human trafficking.

Miranda, standing in the corner, tried to sneak toward the exit, but she was intercepted by the police. My evidence of her embezzlement was already in the hands of the authorities.

I stood there, surrounded by the elite of the city, watching as the man who had ripped my heart out was led away in handcuffs. The world he had built to exclude me had turned into a cell, and I held the key.
