Chapter 9 - The Final Fall

With the custody battle won, the total destruction of the Sterling dynasty became a matter of routine.

Miranda had turned on the family the moment the handcuffs touched her wrists. To secure a lighter sentence for her own fraud, she spilled everything—the secret meetings, the fake documents, and Diane’s direct involvement in the plan to gaslight me into believing I had signed away my parental rights.

I went to the Sterling estate one final time, not as a consultant, but as the owner of the debt that had foreclosed upon it. The house was being emptied by movers. Diane was sitting on the front steps, her world of luxury reduced to a single suitcase. She looked up as I approached, her face etched with a lifetime of bitterness.

"You think you’ve won," she spat, though her voice lacked its former sting. "You’re just like him, aren't you? Cold. Calculating. You’ll never be happy."

I stopped in front of her. I didn't feel hatred anymore—only a profound sense of closure. "I am not like him, Diane. I am a mother who fought for her child. The fact that you see power as a weapon is exactly why you lost everything."

I left her there, a relic of a failed ego.

In the city, the headlines were brutal. 'STERLING EMPIRE CRUMBLES: FROM CHARITY GALA TO CELL BLOCK.' Bennett was facing a decade in prison for kidnapping, fraud, and emotional torture. The Sterling name, once a symbol of prestige, was now a cautionary tale whispered in the boardrooms of the city. My father and I watched the news from his study, the city skyline glittering outside the window—a view that was, in its entirety, now under the protection of the Thorne legacy.

"You’ve done well, June," Elias said, pouring two glasses of wine. "You didn't just reclaim your daughter. You reclaimed your dignity."

"I reclaimed my life," I corrected him.
