Chapter 7 - Secrets Behind the Music Box

Saturday evening brought a rare stillness to the Mercer estate. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp autumn twilight that painted the sky in shades of bruised purple and burning orange.

In the master bedroom suite, Daniel was going through Ellie’s old cedar chest—a task he had postponed for nearly half a year. Each item he touched held an ache: a cashmere sweater that still smelled faintly of lavender, a sketchbook filled with watercolor landscapes of the Connecticut coast, and a small, antique music box inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Daniel picked up the music box. He wound the brass key on the bottom.

Clink, clink, clink.

The tiny internal cylinder began to turn, playing a delicate, tinkling version of Brahms’ Lullaby.

As the lid popped open, a small hidden compartment slid out, revealing a folded letter written on heavy cream-colored stationery. The handwriting was unmistakably Ellie’s.

Daniel’s hands shook as he unfolded the paper.

“My dearest Daniel,” the letter began.

“If you are reading this, it means the worst has happened, and I didn't make it back home. I know how you handle pain, my love—you build walls. You bury yourself in work, you lock the doors, and you try to fix everything with money and logic. Please, don't do that to our little girl.

Lily is as stubborn and brilliant as you are, but she has my heart. If she ever breaks, don't look for specialists or clinical answers. Look for the music. The music is where I will always be waiting for both of you.

And Daniel... watch out for your brother, Julian. He never forgave you for taking over Mercer North. Keep your eyes on the board.

Always yours, Ellie.”

Daniel dropped the letter onto the bed, staring blankly at the wall.

Julian?

His younger brother Julian Mercer—the executive vice president of Mercer North, who had spent the last four months acting like a supportive corporate brother while handling international accounts—was working with Richard Vance?

Daniel grabbed his phone from the nightstand and speed-dialed Marcus, his head of private security.

“Marcus,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into an arctic freeze. “I want a complete forensic audit of every international wire transfer handled by Julian Mercer over the last twelve months. Right now.”

“Boss,” Marcus replied, sounding grim. “You don’t need to wait for the audit. We just intercepted a communication between Julian’s offshore shell company and Apex Logistics. Julian has been leaking proprietary shipping routes to Vance to tank our stock before Monday morning’s board vote.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold. While he was sitting in the music room trying to heal his daughter, his own brother was systematically driving a knife through the heart of Mercer North.

“Lock down his corporate access cards immediately,” Daniel commanded. “Revoke his security clearance. I’m handling this personally.”
