Chapter 10 - A New Dawn at Mercer North

Six months later.
The spring thaw had finally arrived in Connecticut, covering the Mercer estate in brilliant blankets of green grass, blooming tulips, and sunlight that danced across the glass windows of the grand mansion.
Inside the executive boardroom of Mercer North, Daniel Mercer sat at the head of the mahogany table, reviewing quarterly reports that showed record-breaking growth across every division. Apex Logistics had formally dropped its hostile takeover attempt after facing federal probes into their collusion with Julian Mercer, who was currently awaiting federal sentencing in a federal holding facility.
The empire was secure. But more importantly, the home was at peace.
On a bright Saturday morning, the grand piano room was filled with the sound of music.
It wasn't a sad melody. It was “The River Home,” played cleanly, confidently, and with genuine joy.
Lily sat on the piano bench, her little fingers flying across the ivory keys with remarkable precision, while Daniel sat beside her, softly humming along with the tune.
Mrs. Nolan walked into the room carrying a silver tray with fresh lemonade and a small envelope marked with familiar, neat handwriting.
“A postcard just arrived for you, Mr. Mercer,” Mrs. Nolan smiled, handing it to him.
Daniel took the postcard. On the front was a picture of a sunny music school in downtown Stamford. On the back, written in familiar handwriting, were a few simple lines:
“Dear Lily and Daniel, The Harbor Children’s Center just opened a new wing for youth music programs. Thought you’d like to know the kids are playing loud, and the ducks are still stealing my sandwiches. Keep playing. — Mara.”
Daniel turned the postcard over, a warm, genuine smile spreading across his face. He placed it carefully on the music stand right next to Ellie’s old songbook.
“Who’s that from, Daddy?” Lily asked, stopping her playing to look up at him.

“An old friend,” Daniel said, pulling his daughter close against his side. “Come on. Let’s finish the song.”
Together, father and daughter struck the keys, filling the grand mansion with a melody that echoed out through the open windows, welcoming the bright, golden dawn of a brand-new day.
