Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Narrative
By noon, while Daniel and I were sitting across from a hardened state prosecutor in downtown Guadalajara, the family group chat on WhatsApp was exploding into a frenzy of panic and self-preservation.
My phone buzzed continuously against the wooden desk of the prosecutor’s office, vibrating with frantic notifications that I finally pulled out and turned face down. But before I did, a preview banner flashed across the screen from my sister-in-law, Mariela:
“Camila, stop being dramatic. It was an accident. Everyone is blowing this out of proportion. If you ruin our lives over a spilled drink, you’ll regret it.”
Followed immediately by a message from Doña Elena:
“Daniel, answer your phone right now. Your sister is beside herself. That ungrateful woman you married has always been looking for an excuse to tear this family apart. Bring Sofia home and let’s handle this like civilized people instead of making a scandal.”
They still didn't know.
They still believed they were dealing with the old Daniel—the hesitant, conflict-avoidant son who would eventually cave to familial pressure, accept a hollow apology, and sweep the dirt under the rug to keep the peace. They had no idea that Daniel had already handed the unedited security footage, complete with audio and timestamps, to a state prosecutor who specialized in prosecuting violent domestic crimes.
The prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named Alejandra Morales with silver-streaked hair and an unsmiling demeanor, slid our file back across her desk. She looked at Daniel, then at me, and finally down at the medical intake form from the hospital.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Prosecutor Morales began, her voice crisp and professional. "I have reviewed the footage and cross-referenced it with the forensic medical evaluation from the emergency room. This is not an accident, nor is it reckless endangerment. This is an intentional act of violence committed against a two-year-old child."
"What happens next?" Daniel asked, his voice steady.
"We issue an immediate summons for Mariela Vance to appear for questioning under arrest-readiness protocols," Morales said, opening a fresh document on her computer terminal. "Given the severity of the burns and the clear intent demonstrated in the video, we will be charging her with aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm to a minor, with aggravating factors due to familial relationship and abuse of vulnerability."
She paused, looking directly at us. "Her parents—your father and mother—will also be investigated as accessories after the fact, given their active participation in covering up the crime, obstructing emergency assistance, and expelling the victim from the premises while medical distress was evident."
A heavy silence settled over the room.

"Do it," Daniel said without a moment of hesitation. "Charge all of them."
