Chapter 5 - Scars and Summons

Back at the hospital, Sofia’s bandages were changed for the first time by a specialist pediatric plastic surgeon named Dr. Herrera.

The process was agonizing. Even with mild sedatives and local numbing agents, the raw, angry pink of the healing skin along Sofia’s cheek and neck caused her to whimper in her sleep, her tiny fists clenching and unclenching against the hospital linens.

Dr. Herrera adjusted his magnifying loupes, stepping back with a solemn expression as he wrote notes on his clipboard.

"The burns are healing as well as can be expected given the initial trauma," Dr. Herrera explained softly, speaking to Daniel and me in the quiet corner of the room. "The tissue on her neck and collarbone will likely recover with minimal scarring after a course of silicone sheeting and laser therapy as she grows. However... the cheek is deep second-degree, bordering on third in two spots where the hot liquid pooled before dripping off."

My heart squeezed tight in my chest. "Will there be permanent scarring?"

"There will be a visible mark," the doctor said honestly, refusing to sugarcoat the reality. "A hyperpigmented linear scar running from her cheekbone down toward her jawline. We can reduce its appearance significantly over the next few years, but at age two, her skin is delicate, and the thermal damage was severe."

I looked over at Sofia. Her breathing had evened out again, her face peaceful despite the angry white gauze taped carefully across her cheek.

She did this to a baby, I thought, the rage flaring white-hot behind my ribs. Over a toy truck.

That evening, while Daniel stayed by Sofia’s bedside, a pair of state judicial police officers delivered the formal summons to the house in Zapopan.

According to the legal news feeds and confidential sources within the municipal police department who watched the fallout unfold, the arrival of state troopers at Don Fernando’s front gates caused a localized earthquake in the neighborhood. Mariela had reportedly screamed so loudly the neighbors across the street came out onto their balconies to watch.

Doña Elena had allegedly attempted to block the officers from entering, threatening them with her husband's political connections, only to be informed that the warrant had been signed by a state-level judge in Guadalajara who answered to nobody in Zapopan.

By 9:00 p.m., my phone buzzed again.

It wasn't a text message this time. It was a call from an unknown number. I stared at the screen, letting it ring twice before handing it to Daniel.

"Answer it," I said.

Daniel pressed accept and put it on speaker, placing it flat on the bedside table.

"Daniel?"

It was Don Fernando. His voice, usually booming, authoritative, and dripping with unearned arrogance, sounded hollow, cracked, and trembling with disbelief.

"I'm here, Father," Daniel said evenly.

"What is the meaning of this?" Don Fernando demanded, his voice pitching upward into panic. "State police just raided the house. They treated your mother and sister like common criminals! Mariela is having a panic attack, she's locked herself in her room, and the police are saying there's an active warrant for aggravated assault! Daniel, fix this right now. Call whoever you need to call. Tell them it was a misunderstanding!"

Daniel didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell, and he didn't curse. He spoke with a terrifying, absolute calm.

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Dad," Daniel said. "I saw the security footage."

Silence crashed down on the other end of the line. The heavy, dead air of a man realizing his entire reality had just collapsed.

"You... what?" Don Fernando whispered.

"I pulled the 4K logs from the server," Daniel continued steadily. "I saw Mariela deliberately throw boiling coffee at my two-year-old daughter’s face because Sofia touched a toy. I saw Mom stand there and tell me to get my burned child out of her house. And I saw you step over my crying daughter to force us onto the street."

"Daniel, listen to me, family is—"

"Family doesn't scald babies," Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality. "Family doesn't cover up assaults. You raised a monster, Dad, and you spent your whole life protecting her while treating the rest of us like garbage. Well, your protection ran out today. The state prosecutor has the video. The charges are filed. Don't ever call this number again."

He tapped the red button, ending the call, and blocked the number permanently.
