Chapter 7 - The Arraignment

The arraignment took place four days later at the regional judicial center in Zapopan.
The media had somehow caught wind of the story—likely through court clerks or neighborhood gossip leaking the arrest of a prominent local family’s daughter. By the time Daniel, Aunt Sarah (who had driven in from Guadalajara to support us), and I arrived at the courthouse, a small cluster of reporters and camera crews were gathered outside the heavy glass doors, microphones thrusting forward as we walked past.
We didn't stop to talk. We walked straight inside, shielded by two state marshals assigned to protect the witnesses in high-profile domestic violence cases.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Mariela sat at the defense table flanked by two expensive corporate lawyers hired by her father. She looked pale, her dark hair pulled back severely, wearing an oversized beige sweater that swallowed her frame. Gone was the arrogant, sneering woman who had casually thrown scalding coffee at a toddler. She looked small, terrified, and acutely aware that her silver-spoon privilege had just hit a brick wall of state law.
Doña Elena and Don Fernando sat in the second row of the gallery, refusing to look at us as we took our seats on the plaintiff’s side of the aisle.
When the judge entered—a formidable magistrate with steel-rimmed glasses and an impeccably pressed judicial robe—the courtroom rose in unison.
"Case number 4821-B, State versus Mariela Vance," the clerk announced crisply. "Charge: Aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm to a minor, with aggravating family circumstances."
The prosecutor, Alejandra Morales, stood up and delivered her opening brief with devastating precision. She didn't rely on emotional rhetoric; she relied on cold, irrefutable facts. She detailed the medical reports of Sofia’s second-degree burns, the forensic analysis of the burn pattern confirming intentional directional force, and, finally, she requested permission to exhibit the primary piece of evidence.
"Your Honor, the State moves to enter Exhibit A into the record: an unedited 4K security recording captured on the premises at the time of the incident," Prosecutor Morales stated clearly.
Mariela’s defense attorney immediately stood up to object. "Objection, Your Honor. The defense contests the legality of how this digital evidence was obtained, claiming potential unauthorized access to private domestic network systems."
Prosecutor Morales didn't even blink. "Your Honor, the evidence was exported and surrendered by a registered co-owner and system administrator of the property’s network infrastructure, legally submitted under whistleblower protections for violent crimes committed on the premises. We have a signed warrant validating its inclusion."
The judge looked over her glasses, eyeing Mariela’s panicked defense team. "Objection overruled. Exhibit A is admitted into the record."
The courtroom monitor flickered to life.
On the large screen facing the judge, the gallery, and the defense table, the 4K video began to play.
The kitchen sunlight flooded the room. Little Sofia toddled into frame in her yellow dress, reached for the toy truck, and—with sickening clarity—was blasted with boiling coffee by Mariela’s flick of the wrist. The audio filled the silent courtroom: Sofia’s piercing, agonizing shriek, followed immediately by Doña Elena’s cold, commanding voice echoing off the speakers:
"Get that child out of my house!"
In the gallery, Doña Elena buried her face in her hands, letting out a stifled sob. Don Fernando stared straight ahead, his face drained of all color, looking twenty years older than he had a week ago.
Mariela sat frozen at the defense table, staring at the screen as her own malicious act was broadcast in high-definition for the entire judicial system to witness. Her lower lip trembled, and she began to quietly hyperventilate, clutching her arms as the reality of what she had done closed in around her.
The judge watched the video twice, her expression hardening into a mask of pure judicial condemnation.
"The court has reviewed the footage," the judge said when the screen finally went dark. "The severity of the intent, the lack of remorse, and the age of the victim render this a Class A felony charge. Given the risk of flight and the gravity of the offense, bail is denied. The defendant will be remanded to state custody pending trial."

Bang.
The gavel struck wood. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the silent room.
