Chapter 5 - The Cost of Blood and Gold

The subterranean garage beneath Thorne Development was cold, damp, and reeked of exhaust fumes.
Marcus Thorne stood shivering beside his idling Mercedes, checking his watch every five seconds. The appointment was for midnight. In the shadowy corners of the parking structure, two hulking men in leather jackets leaned against a pillar, smoking imported cigarettes with casual, menacing indifference.
Footsteps echoed sharply off the concrete floor.
A tall man with silver-streaked blond hair and a pale, scarred face stepped out of the stairwell. Viktor Petrov.
“Mr. Thorne,” Viktor said, his voice a thick Russian accent that cut through the chill of the garage like a razor. “You sound very desperate on the phone. Desperate men make expensive mistakes.”
Marcus swallowed hard, stepping forward to bridge the distance. “I don't have time for games, Petrov. I need a problem solved. Permanently.”
Viktor stopped a few feet away, his cold blue eyes scanning Marcus with undisguised contempt. “You want to hit Vance Tower. You want your wife and kids back, or rather... you want them erased so your corporate board doesn't find out you’re a domestic abuser who got outmaneuvered by the mafia.”
“Watch your tone,” Marcus snapped defensively. “I’m paying you fifty thousand dollars upfront and half a million upon completion of the contract. You get inside Vance Tower, you extract my family—or eliminate anyone who gets in your way—and you make sure Elias Vance understands he can't touch my assets.”
Viktor let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed off the concrete walls.
“Fifty thousand? For a suicide mission?” Viktor shook his head slowly. “Mr. Thorne, Vance Tower is a literal fortress. It has biometric scanners, thermal sensors, and an elite private security detail trained by former Spetsnaz operatives. To breach that building, I need heavy ordnance, synchronized teams, and a distraction that will shut down half of midtown Manhattan.”
“Then do it!” Marcus hissed, his eyes wide with manic desperation. “I don't care about the collateral damage! Just get it done!”
Viktor stepped closer, the smile vanishing from his face, replaced by a dark, predatory mask. He reached out and grabbed the lapel of Marcus’s expensive Italian suit, pulling the corporate executive upward until his toes barely touched the ground.
“Listen to me, little corporate boy,” Viktor hissed softly into Marcus’s ear. “You think you are the one hiring me? You think you are calling the shots? You are just a frightened little rat squeaking for help because a bigger dog stole your bone. But Elias Vance? He is a apex predator. And the moment I move against his tower, I am declaring open war. The price isn't half a million anymore.”
“Then name your price!” Marcus choked out, clawing at Viktor’s thick hands.

“Your entire commercial real estate portfolio in Queens,” Viktor whispered, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. “Signed over to my front companies before the sun rises. If you refuse, I won't just let Elias Vance crush you—I’ll skin you alive and leave you in the river where your wife was supposed to sleep.”
Marcus’s blood ran cold. He realized, with a sickening jolt of absolute terror, that he had just invited a monster into his house to destroy another monster—and he was the one caught directly in their jaws.
