Chapter 6 - Whispers of a Reckoning

Inside Vance Tower, the morning sun broke through the gray winter clouds, casting long golden shafts of light across the hardwood floors of the penthouse living room.

Ava sat at the kitchen island, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea while watching Lily and Rose sleep peacefully in their double stroller nearby. The physical weakness that had plagued her during her first days in the penthouse was slowly fading, replaced by a quiet, resilient strength she hadn't known she possessed.

Elias walked into the kitchen wearing a charcoal cashmere sweater, his tablet in hand. He paused to check on the twins before walking over to pour himself a cup of black coffee.

“You didn't sleep much last night,” Ava observed quietly, looking at the subtle exhaustion lines around his eyes.

“Intelligence reports,” Elias replied, leaning against the counter across from her. “My informants inside the Russian Bratva just confirmed a meeting in an underground garage in Queens last midnight. Marcus Thorne met with Viktor Petrov.”

Ava’s hand froze halfway to her lips. The cup rattled slightly against the saucer. “Viktor... they actually met?”

“They did,” Elias nodded, his expression grim. “Marcus offered everything he had to launch an assault on this building. He’s desperate enough to burn his own empire to the ground just to keep his secrets buried.”

“What are we going to do?” Ava asked, her voice trembling slightly. As much as she despised Marcus for what he had done, the thought of a full-scale mafia war unfolding over her and her daughters terrified her.

“We aren't going to do anything, Ava,” Elias said gently, walking around the counter and stopping right beside her chair. He placed his hand over hers, his warmth instantly calming her racing pulse. “I am going to finish this. For five years, Marcus Thorne treated you like a possession, discarded you when you didn't bow to his ego, and tried to destroy your life. And now, he’s threatening the safety of my home.”

“Your home?” Ava looked up, her heart skipping a beat at the word.

“Yes,” Elias said without a second of hesitation. “From the moment I carried you and those little girls out of the freezing snow, this became your home. And nobody touches what belongs to me.”

Before Ava could reply, the secure intercom on the kitchen wall chimed twice with a high-priority alert code.

Elias pressed the speaker button.

“Boss,” the voice of his head of security barked through the static. “We have movement. Petrov’s men are mobilizing three transit vans toward Midtown. They’re carrying heavy tactical gear. Intelligence suggests they plan to hit the perimeter loading docks of Vance Tower tonight at midnight.”

A slow, terrifying smile spread across Elias’s face—not a smile of joy, but the expression of a general who had just successfully lured his enemy into a carefully laid trap.

“Let them in,” Elias commanded coldly into the intercom.

“Boss?”

“You heard me,” Elias said, his voice dropping into absolute authority. “Open the outer perimeter gates. Let them breach the loading dock. But make sure every escape route is sealed in steel. Tonight, we end the Russian problem in New York once and for all.”
