Chapter 7 - The Wolf at the Door

The clock on the penthouse wall ticked steadily toward midnight.

Outside, the wind howled against the reinforced glass of Vance Tower, carrying the distant, muffled sirens of the city below. Inside the nursery, the twins slept peacefully, wrapped in warm blankets, oblivious to the storm raging both outside and within the criminal underworld.

Ava sat in the armchair beside the cribs, a book resting unread in her lap. She jumped every time the wind rattled the windowpanes.

The heavy oak door of the nursery pushed open quietly.

Elias stepped inside. He had changed into tactical gear—a dark combat vest over a black turtleneck, a heavy leather holster strapped securely across his chest. He looked every bit the feared mafia boss he was, a man forged in violence and absolute survival.

“Elias,” Ava whispered, standing up immediately. “Is it starting?”

“It’s almost over,” Elias said softly, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently touching her cheek. “I need you to stay in this room, Ava. The security doors are locked from the inside with titanium deadbolts. Even if the entire building shakes, nothing gets past this threshold.”

“Be careful,” Ava pleaded, her hand instinctively catching his wrist. Her brown eyes shone with unshed tears. “Please... don't let them hurt you. My girls finally have someone who looks at them like they matter. I can't lose you too.”

Elias paused. A flicker of profound emotion crossed his dark eyes—something raw and tender that he rarely allowed the world to see. He leaned down, pressing his lips softly against her forehead in a lingering, protective kiss.

“I always come back, Ava,” he murmured against her skin. Then he turned and walked out into the hallway, pulling the heavy door shut behind him.

Down in the subterranean loading docks of Vance Tower, the trap sprang shut with terrifying precision.

Viktor Petrov’s tactical team blew through the outer security gate using industrial charges, expecting a disorganized scramble of guards. Instead, the moment their three transit vans crossed the threshold into the cavernous concrete garage, heavy steel bulkhead doors dropped from the ceiling behind them, sealing off their exit with a deafening crash.

Before the Russian mercenaries could even unholster their assault rifles, the overhead lights went pitch black, replaced instantly by blinding strobe lights and ear-splitting disorienation alarms.

From the shadows of the catwalks above, Elias’s elite security force opened fire with non-lethal rubber and acoustic suppression rounds, followed swiftly by disciplined, overwhelming close-quarters combat.

Viktor Petrov staggered out of the van, his nose bleeding, his tactical vest smoking from a flashbang grenade. He raised his pistol, screaming curses in Russian into the blinding strobe lights.

“Vance! Come out and face me, you coward!” Viktor roared.

Step by measured step, boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete, Elias Vance emerged from the darkness. He walked alone, weaponless save for the cold, lethal confidence radiating from his entire posture.

“You brought trash into my city, Viktor,” Elias said, his voice cutting through the ringing alarms with terrifying clarity.

Viktor snarled, leveling his pistol directly at Elias’s chest. “You think you’ve won, Vance? You think—!”

Before Viktor could pull the trigger, a laser dot flickered onto the center of his forehead. From the shadows behind him, three sniper rifles clicked simultaneously.

Elias didn't even blink. He walked up until he was standing just two feet away from the Russian mob boss.

“It’s over, Viktor,” Elias whispered.
