Chapter 2 - The Rebuilding

The city of Oakhaven was a world away from the suffocating luxury of the estate Arthur had fled. It was a place of steel, glass, and relentless ambition. For Arthur, it was the perfect cocoon to rebuild his identity. He didn't just want to be successful; he wanted to be the kind of man whose success could never be used as a weapon against his children.

Arthur secured a role as a turnaround consultant. Companies on the brink of collapse hired him to strip away the rot. It was ironic, he thought, as he sat in his modest office overlooking the bustling harbor; he was literally fixing broken things for a living, much like he was doing with his own life.

Life for Leo, Sarah, and Toby changed drastically. They were no longer the props in their grandparents' theater of cruelty. Instead, they were part of a team. At night, after Arthur finished his reports, the four of them would gather around a small table in their apartment, eating takeout and mapping out their dreams on giant rolls of butcher paper.

"Are we poor, Dad?" Toby asked one evening, his eyes wide as he looked at the sparse furnishings.

Arthur pulled his son into a hug. "We are rich in the ways that matter, Toby. We have a future that belongs to us. No one can take that away unless we let them."

The "failure" his father had taunted him with became his secret fuel. Every spreadsheet he audited, every negotiation he led, was done with a singular focus: to create a legacy that his children could stand on. He became known in the industry as "The Architect"—a man who could build something out of nothing. But the further he climbed, the more he sensed a shadow. His parents, prideful and vindictive, weren't the type to let a "traitor" simply walk away.
