The weeks following the gala were a whirlwind of legal firestorms. The evidence Arthur had presented acted like a catalyst, causing the foundation of his parents' life to implode under the weight of regulatory investigations and lawsuits from those they had exploited. The society that had once toasted them at lavish parties now treated them like toxic waste; they were social pariahs, their assets frozen, their reputation permanently shattered.
Arthur did not celebrate. Instead, he felt a strange, hollow silence. He returned home to his children, who were now teenagers and had followed the news with a mixture of confusion and burgeoning understanding.
"Is it over, Dad?" Leo asked, looking at his father across the dinner table.
Arthur looked at his son—the boy who had once served hors d'oeuvres in a waiter's vest, now a bright, empathetic young man. "The legal battle is over, yes. But the ghosts are still there."
The true fallout wasn't just the loss of their wealth; it was the total erasure of his parents' power. Marcus and Elena, now living in a small, cramped apartment while their estate was being liquidated, reached out to Arthur. It wasn't an apology, but a desperate, pathetic request for financial support. They were trapped in the same mindset that had defined their lives: transactional, cold, and entirely devoid of love.
Arthur visited them once. The sight of his father, humbled by circumstance but still spitting bile, confirmed everything he had feared. He realized that they were incapable of change.
