Chapter 5 - The Whitmore Fortress Crumbles

Inside the opulent dining room of the Whitmore estate, porcelain teacups sat untouched on silver saucers.

Grant Whitmore stared blankly at the television mounted on the wood-paneled wall. The anchorwoman’s voice droned on, detailing the federal raids currently underway at the Whitmore Development warehouses on the industrial waterfront.

“They’re seizing the hard drives,” Grant muttered, his voice hollow, stripped of all arrogance. “Federal agents walked right past security. They didn't even show a paper warrant; they had a digital magistrate signoff within ten minutes of the filing.”

Evelyn Whitmore sat at the head of the table. Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, but her knuckles were bloodless. The invincible matriarch of Charleston looked suddenly old, the lines around her eyes carved deep by panic and betrayal.

“Where is your legal team?” Evelyn demanded, though her voice lacked its usual icy authority.

“They’ve all recused themselves,” Grant laughed bitterly, a harsh, ugly sound. “Abe Miller, our chief counsel for twenty years, called me from Miami thirty minutes ago to say he’s cooperating with the U.S. Attorney in exchange for immunity. Everyone is jumping ship, Mother. The entire firm is scattering like rats.”

The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open abruptly.

Three federal marshals, accompanied by two armed local officers, stepped into the room. Leading them was Special Agent Vance, his badge catching the light of the chandelier.

“Grant Whitmore, you are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, environmental safety violations, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and financial corruption,” Agent Vance announced, his voice echoing off the silver and crystal.

Grant didn't move. He didn't run. He simply stared at his hands, his wedding band still glinting on his left ring finger—a ring Madison had slipped off her finger and left on the altar before she walked away.

As the cuffs were clicked around his wrists, Grant looked up at his mother.

Evelyn turned her face away, refusing to meet his eyes. Even in ruin, she was calculating how to protect her own assets while cutting her son loose to absorb the entire weight of the federal indictment.
