Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Print Shop

By late evening, the federal raids had expanded to include secondary properties, personal accounts, and storage lockers linked to the Whitmore family trust.
Madison and Rachel returned to the safe apartment above the print shop in West Ashley, exhausted, drained, but profoundly alive. The adrenaline that had sustained them through the night and day was beginning to fade, replaced by a heavy, quiet stillness.
“We did it,” Rachel breathed, dropping her keys onto the small kitchen table and sinking onto the sofa. “Look at the news. Grant is in federal custody, Evelyn’s assets have been frozen by court order, and the EPA has officially condemned Meadowbrook Commons.”
Madison stood by the window, peering cautiously through a gap in the heavy curtains. The street below was dark, quiet, illuminated only by the amber glow of a single sodium streetlight flickering against the brick facade.
“It’s not over yet,” Madison said quietly.
Rachel sat up, frowning. “What do you mean? They’ve lost everything. The empire is gone.”
“Evelyn Whitmore built that empire over forty years,” Madison said, turning away from the window. “A woman like that doesn't go quietly into federal prison because her son was an arrogant idiot. She has hidden assets, offshore accounts that haven't been touched, and loyalists who aren't wearing Whitmore name tags.”
Before Rachel could reply, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the ground floor—the heavy wooden door of the abandoned print shop being forced open.
The two women froze.
In the sudden, suffocating silence of the apartment, the sound of heavy boots stepping onto the interior concrete stairs sent a jolt of ice straight down Madison’s spine.
“Did you lock the deadbolt?” Rachel whispered, her face draining of color.
“Yes,” Madison breathed, her eyes darting around the room for an exit. The apartment had only one door and one small fire escape window overlooking a ten-drop alleyway.
The heavy footsteps reached the landing outside their door.
Thud. Thud.
Then, a low, mechanical whir echoed through the hallway.

A hydraulic breaching tool.
“Get to the window!” Madison hissed, grabbing Rachel by the arm and shoving her toward the fire escape as the outer door exploded inward with a deafening crash of splintered wood and iron bolts.
