Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Docks

The rain began to fall as midnight approached, turning the cobblestones of the Charleston historic district into slick, black mirrors reflecting the gas lamps.

The security deposit box at the South Carolina National Bank yielded what Agent Vance called the smoking gun of the century: three leather-bound journals written in Arthur Carter’s precise, meticulous handwriting, detailing every bribe, every threat, and every corporate conspiracy executed by Evelyn Whitmore over three decades.

Armed with the journals, federal judges issued emergency arrest warrants for Evelyn Whitmore on charges of racketeering, conspiracy, and the wrongful death of Arthur Carter.

But before the marshals could reach the Whitmore estate, a direct, encrypted satellite call came through to Madison’s cell phone while she and Rachel were riding in the back of an unmarked federal SUV.

Madison flipped open the phone and pressed accept.

“Madison,” a voice breathed. It wasn't Evelyn. It was Grant.

He sounded unhinged, his words slurred and frantic, background noise of roaring diesel engines and crashing waves echoing through the speaker.

“Grant, where are you?” Madison demanded.

“I’m at the old shipping pier at Dock Four,” Grant laughed crazily. “Mother is gone. The federal agents are raiding the mansion as we speak. Everything my family built for fifty years... gone because I trusted the wrong people. And it all leads back to you.”

“Grant, don't do anything stupid. Turn yourself in.”

“I’m not doing anything stupid, Madison. I’m just finishing what we started at the altar,” Grant hissed. “You want your father’s legacy back? You want to see the truth come to light? Come down to Dock Four alone. Bring the journals. Otherwise, I swear to God, I’ll burn every last piece of evidence, along with the shipping warehouse where your father’s old files were originally stored.”

The line went dead.

Madison looked up at Agent Vance, who had overheard every word on the vehicle’s speaker system.

“He’s at Dock Four,” Madison said. “And he’s going to burn the remaining physical archives.”

“We’ll roll a tactical team in right now,” Vance said, reaching for his radio.

“No,” Madison interrupted, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unbreakable resolve. “If you roll a tactical team in with sirens blaring, he’ll panic and torch the warehouse. This is between him and me. I’m going down there.”
