Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Basement

The air in the subterranean level of the mansion was cold, smelling of old concrete, wine racks, and damp earth.
Adrian descended the stone stairs slowly, his boots making no sound on the runner. The flashlight beam cut through the thick darkness, revealing the long hallway lined with archival storage rooms and the central server vault where the estate’s security systems were housed.
The door to the server vault was standing wide open. Sparks sputtered from an exposed junction box near the frame.
Inside, two men dressed in dark rain jackets were using a portable angle grinder to cut through the reinforced steel file cabinet where the original physical deeds, trust ledgers, and Claire’s personal journals were stored.
Standing behind them, holding a heavy tactical flashlight, was Julian Mercer.
“Hurry up!” Julian hissed, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “The hard drives in the study were wiped by his lawyers, but the physical audit receipts from 2024 are in this box! If the prosecutor gets those paper originals, we’re finished!”
“Looking for these?” Adrian’s voice sounded from the doorway.
Julian spun around, blinding Adrian with his flashlight beam.
“Adrian!” Julian gasped, stepping back into the server rack.
Adrian clicked his heavy bronze poker against the iron door frame. CLANG. The sharp, metallic ring sounded like a gunshot in the enclosed space.
“You broke into my house, Julian,” Adrian said, stepping into the room. His face was completely shadowed, his eyes burning with lethal intent. “Armed burglary. Destruction of estate property. You just added ten years to your federal sentence.”
Julian’s fear suddenly twisted into a desperate, feral rage. He signaled the two hired men with his hand.
“Get the ledger!” Julian screamed. “Knock him out!”
The larger of the two men—a burly man holding an iron crowbar—lunged forward, swinging the heavy tool directly at Adrian’s head!
Adrian ducked beneath the swing, the iron whistling inches above his ear. Using his momentum, Adrian slammed the bronze poker straight into the man’s ribs!
THUD!
The man gasped, dropping the crowbar as he crumpled to his knees.
The second man rushed Adrian from the side, tackling him against the metal server racks. The heavy steel framework groaned under their weight as flashlights tumbled to the floor, sending wild beams of light spinning across the ceiling!
Adrian drove his elbow back into the attacker’s sternum, breaking his grip, then grabbed the man by his collar and drove him face-first into the concrete wall!
BANG!
The man collapsed, unconscious.
Julian scrambled toward the rear exit stairs, clutching a thick black leather folder he had pulled from the cabinet.
Adrian sprinted across the room, grabbing Julian by his leather coat and slamming him violently against the iron server rack!
THUD!
Server cables tore loose, showering blue sparks across Julian’s face as he shrieked in terror.
“Give me the folder,” Adrian growled, his hand locked around Julian’s throat until his cousin’s face turned deep purple.
Julian dropped the folder. “Adrian... please... it was Mother! She made me set up the Cayman accounts! She said you’d never check!”
“You stole from a dying woman,” Adrian whispered into Julian’s ear, his jaw trembling with violent disgust. “You tried to take my son’s home.”

He threw Julian to the floor, stepping on his chest to pin him down as sirens began to wail in the distance—the sound of police cruisers approaching the estate grounds.
Beatrice had called the authorities from the carriage house the moment the basement doors were breached.
