Chapter 8 - The Fall of Margaret Mercer

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the storm had completely passed, leaving a crisp, pristine autumn sky over Manhattan.
The emergency board meeting of Mercer Global Logistics was held on the top floor of the Mercer Tower in Midtown. Sixteen senior board members, corporate lawyers, and major shareholders sat around the massive oval glass table.
Margaret Mercer sat at the head of the table, dressed in a sharp black suit, a pearl necklace around her throat. She had spent the morning trying to contact Julian, unaware that her son was currently sitting in a central booking holding cell following his arrest at the mansion.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Margaret announced smoothly, smoothing her skirt. “Thank you for attending. Due to unfortunate domestic developments involving my nephew Adrian’s psychological fitness, I am calling for an immediate vote to ratify the liquidation of the Mercer Estate and transfer executive voting shares to—”
The double glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
Adrian walked in.
He wore a tailored black suit, pristine white shirt, and navy tie. His posture was commanding, his eyes bright, clear, and completely devoid of the grief that had shadowed him for eight months.
Beside him walked State Prosecutor Eleanor Vance and two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Division.
Behind them came Elena, carrying a neat leather briefcase containing the recovered paper ledgers.
Margaret’s face went completely grey. She stood up so fast her leather chair rolled back into the glass window.
“Adrian?” Margaret stammered, her voice losing its smooth polish. “What... what is the meaning of this intrusion?”
“The meeting is adjourned, Margaret,” Adrian said, walking to the table and setting a thick folder down in front of the lead board director.
Prosecutor Vance stepped forward. “Margaret Mercer, I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Supreme Court of New York. Charges include grand larceny, corporate fraud, destruction of estate evidence, and conspiracy to commit extortion.”
Gasps erupted across the boardroom! The board members leaned forward, reading the certified wire transfer documents Adrian had provided.
“This is an absurdity!” Margaret shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace. “I am the matriarch of this company! You can’t arrest me based on the lies of a grieving lunatic and his hired help!”
“Your son Julian gave a full confession three hours ago, Mrs. Mercer,” Prosecutor Vance revealed calmly. “He provided the encryption keys to your Cayman Islands accounts in exchange for a plea deal.”
Margaret looked around the room at the sixteen board members—men and women who had catered to her every whim for a decade. Every single one of them turned their heads away, refusing to meet her eyes.
The lead director looked up at Adrian, offering a deep, respectful bow of his head. “Welcome back, Chairman Mercer.”
The two officers stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Margaret’s manicured wrists.
“Adrian!” Margaret screamed as she was led toward the doors, her polished facade collapsing into pathetic desperation. “I did it for the family! I did it to keep the company strong! You can’t do this to me!”

Adrian looked at her with pure, quiet indifference.
“You aren't my family, Margaret,” Adrian said. “Claire was. Noah is.”
