Chapter 9 - The Removal of the Listing

By Friday afternoon, the Vanguard Premier Real Estate listing for the Mercer Estate had been permanently deleted from every private MLS network in the country.

The silver sedan belonging to Arthur Pendelton pulled out of the gravel driveway for the last time, carrying a formal legal notice barring the brokerage from ever approaching the property again.

The mansion was quiet, filled with the warm, golden light of an early autumn sunset.

In the grand foyer, the large framed portrait of Claire Mercer had been restored to its place of honor above the fireplace in the main drawing room—not hidden away in a study, but sitting where the sunlight hit it every morning.

Noah stood on a stool near the hearth, carefully setting a small wooden toy boat on the mantlepiece right beneath his mother’s picture.

Elena stood nearby, helping him adjust the boat so it wouldn't slip.

Adrian walked into the room, holding two cups of hot cocoa. He handed one to Elena, his fingers brushing gently against hers.

“Thank you,” Elena said, offering a warm smile that reached her eyes.

“The board voted unanimously today,” Adrian shared, leaning his back against the stone fireplace, watching Noah play. “We’re launching the Claire Mercer Foundation for Children’s Health. We’re funding the entire hospice wing where Claire spent her last months.”

Elena’s eyes filled with soft tears. “She would have loved that, Adrian.”

“And I want you to run the local advisory board,” Adrian added softly, looking directly into Elena’s green eyes. “If you’ll accept the position.”

Elena blinked, surprised. “Adrian... I’m a housekeeper.”

“You were Claire’s guardian angel,” Adrian corrected gently. “And you saved my son when I was too blind to see what was happening around me. You belong here, Elena. Not downstairs... but with us.”

Noah stepped down from the stool, running over and wrapping his small arms around Elena’s waist. “Please stay, Elena. You promised we could plant sunflowers in the garden next spring.”

Elena looked down at the boy, then up at Adrian. She reached into her pocket, holding the small silver swallow pendant Claire had given her, feeling its warmth against her skin.

“I’m not going anywhere, Noah,” Elena whispered, smiling down at him. “I’m right here.”
