Chapter 2 - The Shattering and the Rise

The silence that filled the grand living room was thick enough to choke on. The crushed white roses lay scattered across the polished hardwood floor, their petals bruised and broken, mirroring the exact state of my heart.

Ashley had turned slowly around in my custom leather armchair, her initial expression of arrogant comfort flickering for a split second before she effortlessly slid back into a mask of professional composure. She crossed her legs more deliberately, resting an unbitten piece of fruit on the side table, and offered me a smile that dripped with condescension.

“Mr. Vance,” Ashley purred, her voice smooth and falsely soothing, as if she were addressing an impatient client rather than a man who had just caught her in the act of psychological torture. “You’re back early. We weren’t expecting you until next week. Your wife... well, she’s had a bit of a rough morning. She’s been somewhat hysterical, and I was just trying to help her clean up the mess she made.”

Hysterical. A mess.

The words echoed in my brain like gunshots.

I didn’t look at Ashley. I couldn’t. If I looked at her for one more second, my hands would find her throat, and I knew I couldn't afford to throw my life away when Lily needed me to be her anchor.

Instead, I dropped to my knees right there in the sour, gray puddle of dirty mop water.

“Lily,” I choked out, my voice breaking completely as I reached out with trembling hands.

At the movement, Lily flinched violently, squeezing her eyes shut and curling her seven-month pregnant body into a tight, protective ball over her swollen stomach. She raised her hands defensively, as if bracing for a blow.

“No... no, I’m sorry! I’ll clean it faster! Please don’t be mad! Please don’t send me away!” she sobbed, the sound tearing right through my soul.

“Lily, look at me. Open your eyes, my love. It’s Daniel. It’s me,” I wept, ignoring the filthy water soaking through the knees of my expensive trousers. I gently, oh so carefully, slid my arms around her trembling shoulders, pulling her away from the harsh scrub brush and into my chest.

For a terrifying second, she stiffened, her body trembling with a terror so deep it felt permanent. Then, slowly, as the scent of my jacket registered—as the warmth of my embrace sank past the layers of cold isolation—she let out a ragged, shattering gasp.

Her arms flew around my neck, her fingernails digging into my back as she buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing with a grief that had been locked inside her for months.

“You’re here... you’re really here...” she wept into my shirt. “I thought... she told me you didn't care... she said you left because you hated being here with us...”

“Never,” I whispered fiercely, pressing kisses into her hair while tears streamed down my own face. “Never, Lily. I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry. I’m never leaving you again.”

Behind us, Ashley scoffed softly, picking up a napkin to wipe her fingers.

“Oh, please,” Ashley sneered, standing up from the armchair with all the entitlement of a queen addressing commoners. “Don’t play the devoted husband now, Mr. Vance. You’ve been ignoring her for months, burying yourself in spreadsheets while your wife falls apart. I’m the only one who kept this household running while you played big-shot banker. If you fire me, you won’t survive a week with someone who can’t even handle a little discipline.”
