Chapter 3 - Tearing Down the Fortress

That was when I stood up.
I left Lily seated safely against the sofa, wrapping her in my cashmere coat to block out the chill of the room. I rose to my full height, turning to face Ashley. All the grief, all the guilt, and all the self-loathing transformed instantly into a cold, blinding fury.
Ashley took half a step back, her smug smile finally faltering as she saw the look in my eyes.
“You think you can manage this house?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying the weight of a storm about to break. “You think you can starve my wife, steal the money I left for her care, psychological-torture a pregnant woman, and walk away?”
“I have rights! You can’t just—” Ashley stammered, her voice losing its polished edge as panic finally crept in.
“I don’t care about your rights,” I snapped, pulling my phone from my pocket with fingers that shook with adrenaline. I dialed the direct private line to Marcus, my head of security. “Marcus. Bring the estate guards to the main living room immediately. And call the local police precinct. We have an intruder committing extortion, theft, and abuse under my roof.”
“Right away, sir,” Marcus’s voice came back crisp and immediate.
Ashley’s face drained of all color. The mask shattered completely, revealing the petty, cruel opportunist underneath. “You can’t do this! I’ll ruin you! I’ll tell everyone you drove her crazy! I’ll—!”
“Shut up,” I roared, the sound echoing off the vaulted ceilings with such intensity that Ashley physically cowered. “Don’t speak. Don’t breathe. You are done in this house.”
Within two minutes, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble hallway. Marcus and two senior estate security officers arrived, their faces grim as they took in the scene: the dirty water, the broken roses, my sobbing wife wrapped in my coat, and Ashley standing frozen in panic.
“Escort her off the property,” I ordered, pointing a finger at Ashley. “Confiscate her phone, her bag, and every single key card to this estate. Check her belongings at the door—she has been stealing grocery and medical funds meant for my wife.”
“You can’t touch my things! That’s illegal!” Ashley shrieked as Marcus and the guards stepped forward, firmly taking her by the arms.
“Try me,” I whispered, stepping close enough for her to see the absolute devastation she had caused. “If you ever come within five miles of me, my wife, or my child again, I will ensure you spend the rest of your life behind bars.”

As Ashley was dragged kicking and screaming out of the grand foyer, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her screeching voice.
The silence returned, but this time, it was a silence of purging. The poison had been cast out. But the real work—healing the damage done to the woman I loved—was only just beginning.
