Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Campaign

The war moved from the private to the public sphere. I walked into the office on Monday morning to find my floor in chaos.

My assistant, Sarah, looked pale. "David, there’s… there’s a press release circulating. It’s an anonymous source, but it’s hitting the financial news wires. They’re claiming you had a mental break in Chicago. That you’re erratic, dangerous, and that the board is calling for an emergency vote to remove you."

I felt a surge of cold fury. This was Chloe’s handiwork—she had always been the whisperer, the one who navigated the social circles to sow the seeds of destruction. She was painting me as the villain to save her own skin.

"They're framing you for the very thing they did," Sarah said, her voice shaking. "They’re saying you neglected your family."

"Call the PR firm," I said, my voice steady. "We aren't going to deny it. We’re going to overwrite it."

I spent the next twelve hours in a state of hyper-focus. I didn't just fight back; I went on the offensive. I released a statement through our legal counsel acknowledging a "private family health crisis" and announcing that I had successfully protected my son and wife from "prolonged abuse and financial exploitation."

The market, usually skittish at scandal, reacted with shock when they saw the evidence I leaked alongside the statement: bank records showing Diane’s embezzlement. It wasn't just a domestic issue anymore; it was a corporate scandal.

However, the psychological warfare was harder. My phone began receiving anonymous texts. ‘Noah is fragile, David. Is he safe in that hotel? We know where you are.’

It was a constant, gnawing threat. Every shadow in the hotel lobby looked like one of my mother’s hired men. I realized then that I couldn't just fight them with lawyers; I had to outmaneuver them in their own dark territory. I contacted an old friend, Marcus, who ran a private intelligence firm.

"I need eyes, Marcus," I said. "Not just on my family. I need to know everything Diane and Chloe have done for the last decade. Every secret, every leverage point, every person they've broken."

"You sure you want to open that box, David?" Marcus asked.

"I’m the one who closed the lid," I replied. "It’s time to see what’s inside."
