Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The aftermath was a blur of police sirens and flashbulbs. As the authorities escorted my mother and Chloe from the ballroom, they didn't look like the queens of our society; they looked small, petty, and entirely defeated.

Chloe, ever the coward, immediately began pointing fingers. "It was all her! She told me what to do! I didn't know it was illegal!"

Diane didn't look at Chloe. She looked at me. Her expression wasn't one of remorse; it was one of pure, unadulterated shock. She hadn't thought I had the capacity to do this. She had never seen me as a man, only as a tool she had forged to do her bidding.

"You've ruined us," she whispered as a female officer took her arm.

"No," I replied, standing next to my father, who was finally breathing fresh air. "I just stopped you from ruining everyone else."

They were taken away in the back of a squad car, their faces obscured by the tinted windows. The gala, once the site of our family's triumph, became the site of our liberation.

That night, my father was taken to a hospital for a full recovery, and I returned to our secure suite. Elena was waiting. She didn't say a word; she simply crossed the room and wrapped her arms around me.

"It's over?" she asked into my shoulder.

"The nightmare is over," I said. "But the rest of our lives is just beginning."

We spent the night in the quiet, safe space we had built for ourselves. For the first time, there were no secrets, no hidden keys, and no one watching. But as I lay in the dark, I knew that while the physical threat was contained, we had to make sure the legal and personal debris was cleared once and for all before we could truly be free.
