Chapter 9 - The Final Gambit

Just as we thought the legal walls were closing in on them, Diane attempted one last, desperate maneuver. From her holding facility, she filed for emergency custody of Noah, claiming that my "hostile takeover" of my own company and the "kidnapping" of my father proved I was unfit. It was a projection of the highest order, but she had managed to hire a shark of an attorney who specialized in smear campaigns.

The courtroom was a sterile, unforgiving place. Diane arrived looking frail, a costume change meant to garner sympathy from the judge. She sat in the gallery, her eyes cold, watching me with a look of predatory expectation.

When Elena took the stand, the atmosphere shifted. She didn't look like the woman who had cried on the kitchen floor. She spoke with a quiet, devastating clarity. She detailed the shattered phone, the locked doors, the stolen keys, and the systemic gaslighting that had nearly cost our son his life. She didn't shout; she didn't weep. She simply spoke the truth, and the truth, in that room, was louder than anything Diane’s lawyers could conjure.

I followed her, detailing the financial records of the embezzlement and the medical logs from the Evergreen facility. By the time I sat down, Diane’s attorney looked visibly defeated. The judge, a woman who had clearly seen enough of Diane’s type, looked down at my mother with a mixture of pity and contempt. The ruling was swift: the petition for custody was denied with prejudice, and a permanent restraining order was granted, banning both Diane and Chloe from coming within a hundred yards of us.
