Chapter 2 - Behind the Grand Iron Gates

The double iron gates of the estate swung shut with a heavy, definitive thud, locking out the sound of Mark’s frantic voice shouting my name from across the pavement.
I didn't turn back. I carried Noah in one arm, supported my mother with the other, while Lily held tightly to my mother’s skirt. We walked up the cobblestone driveway lined with weeping willows toward the limestone entrance of the sprawling French country mansion I had quietly purchased three years ago as a private sanctuary for my family’s future.
The moment the front oak doors opened, my head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, stepped forward, her professional demeanor softening into immediate concern as she took in the sight of my mother's bruised face and swollen wrist.
"Madam! What happened?" Mrs. Gable gasped, rushing to take Noah from my arms. "Is Mrs. Rose alright?"
"Call Dr. Harrison immediately," I ordered, my voice clipped and cold. "Have him bring a mobile X-ray unit and a forensic medical team. We need every injury documented on official record."
"Right away, ma'am."
I guided my mother into the primary living suite, easing her down onto a plush plush velvet sofa. Noah and Lily, sensing the shift in environment, sat quietly beside her, burying their small faces into her side. Rose looked around the vaulted ceilings, the crystal chandeliers, and the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the manicured gardens, her eyes wide with shock and confusion.
"Claire..." Rose whispered, her voice cracking as she clutched my hand with her uninjured fingers. "What is this place? How... how can you afford this?"
"I built a software logistics company five years ago, Mom," I said gently, kneeling beside her and brushing a stray lock of hair from her pale forehead. "I kept it quiet because Mark and Eleanor always had an insatiable appetite for money. I wanted a place where you and the children could live in peace once I finalized my exit strategy from Mark. But I waited too long."
I looked down at her swollen wrist, where five deep purple indentations formed the unmistakable pattern of a man's hand.
"Tell me the truth, Mom. How did you get these bruises?"
Rose closed her eyes, tears spilling down her weathered cheeks. "Yesterday morning... Eleanor found out you were coming home early. She demanded I hand over the deed to my farm's remaining pasture land so Mark could sell it for cash. When I told her the land was already put into a trust for Noah and Lily, she lost her temper."
A cold rage ignited in my chest. "She struck you?"
"She slapped me across the mouth," Rose sobbed softly. "I tried to walk out the front door to call you, but Mark blocked the hallway. He grabbed my arm, twisted it behind my back, and forced me into the kitchen counter. He said... he said if I breathed a word to you, he’d make sure I never saw the twins again."

My knuckles turned white against the sofa cushion. The mother who had sacrificed her youth, her physical health, and her land to pay for my university education had been beaten and held hostage in my own home by two parasites living off my paycheck.
"They thought they held all the cards," I whispered, standing up as the front doorbell chimed. "They have no idea what is coming for them."
