Chapter 4 - The Legal Hammer

By 8:00 PM, Dr. Harrison and his team had completed a comprehensive medical assessment of my mother in the mansion’s primary guest wing.

"Three hairline fractures in her left wrist, severe soft-tissue bruising consistent with blunt force impacts, and clear finger-pattern contusions on her upper arm," Dr. Harrison stated, handing me a detailed medical chart and high-resolution digital X-rays. "This isn't a fall, Claire. This is an aggravated felony assault on an elderly person."

"Thank you, Doctor. Keep those records sealed on our secure server," I said.

Sitting across from me in the mansion's mahogany-paneled library was Victoria Vance, the most ruthless high-conflict divorce and corporate litigator in the state. On the table between us lay a laptop displaying live footage from the security system I had secretly installed inside my old home six months ago.

"The footage is crystal clear, Claire," Victoria said, tapping the spacebar to play a key clip.

On the screen, Eleanor's face appeared in full high-definition video. The audio captured her voice with terrifying clarity as she struck my mother across the mouth, followed by Mark grabbing Rose’s arm, pinning her against the granite counter, and snarling threats into her ear while my two-year-old twins wept in the background.

"This is golden," Victoria said, a sharp, icy smile touching her lips. "Not only do we have ironclad grounds for a fault-based divorce with zero spousal support, but we also have enough evidence to secure immediate emergency protection orders and felony criminal indictments against both of them."

"I don't just want a divorce, Victoria," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous murmur. "I want them stripped of every illusion of comfort they built on my back. I want the world to see what they are."

"Then we strike on three fronts," Victoria replied, pulling out a thick set of legal motions. "First, I am filing an emergency petition for sole physical and legal custody of the children, along with an immediate restraining order barring Mark and Eleanor from coming within one thousand feet of you or your mother."

"Second?"

"Second, we file formal criminal complaints with the District Attorney's office for felony elder abuse, false imprisonment, and extortion. Third, we initiate immediate eviction proceedings for the house across the street and order a forensic audit of the 'marketing agency' you funded for Mark."

I looked out the window toward the dark house across the street. A lone flashlight beam was flickering in the living room window as Mark and Eleanor searched for candles in the heat.

"Do it," I said. "And do it before sunrise."
