Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Downtown Nightmare

While Daniel was being physically ejected from his own corporate headquarters, Vanessa was experiencing a parallel catastrophe in the VIP maternity suite at St. Jude’s Hospital.

At 11:00 AM, the hospital billing administrator and two security guards walked into Room 412.

Vanessa was still sitting in bed, wearing a silk designer robe, scrolling irritably through her phone while trying to figure out why none of her luxury retail credit cards were working online.

“Mrs. Valeon,” the billing administrator announced, standing at the foot of the bed with a clipboard. “We have not received payment authorization for your stay, nor has the discharge deposit cleared. Furthermore, your husband’s corporate insurance policy was flagged this morning as invalid due to corporate policy termination.”

Vanessa scoffed, tossing her phone onto the mattress. “Do you know who we are? My husband is Daniel Valeon, CEO of Valeon Technologies! Send the bill to his executive assistant! Or better yet, bill our primary estate account!”

“We tried, ma'am,” the administrator replied flatly. “All accounts associated with Daniel and Vanessa Valeon have been declined for insufficient funds and administrative blocks. Unless you can provide an alternative method of payment immediately, the hospital cannot authorize formal discharge, nor can we release the infant under unverified financial custody.”

Vanessa’s face drained of color. “Release my son?! Are you insane?! I am his mother!”

“You are welcome to discharge yourself at any time, Mrs. Valeon,” the administrator said coldly. “However, hospital policy dictates that unpaid balances exceeding twenty-five thousand dollars require immediate collateral holding or cash settlement before patient transport.”

Panic surged through Vanessa like an electric shock. She grabbed her designer handbag from the bedside table, unzipped it frantically, and pulled out her diamond-encrusted platinum card.

“Swipe this!” she demanded, shoving the card toward the portable reader. “It has a fifty-thousand-dollar limit! Just run it!”

The nurse inserted the card.

DECLINED - ACCOUNT CLOSED BY ISSUER.

Vanessa grabbed the machine, jiggling the card herself. Declined. Declined. Declined.

“No... no, this is a mistake!” Vanessa shrieked, bursting into hysterical tears as she clutched her baby closer to her chest. “My mother-in-law... that filthy old woman did this! She’s playing a trick!”

“Ma'am, you have until 3:00 PM to settle your account or secure private legal representation,” the administrator said, turning toward the door. “Otherwise, the hospital’s legal department will file a financial default notice.”

Left alone in the sterile white room with only a crying newborn and a dead phone, Vanessa realized the terrifying truth: without Daniel’s money—or rather, the money that had never truly belonged to Daniel in the first place—she was entirely powerless.
