Chapter 6 - The Architect of the Empire

Daniel rushed toward the iron bars, pressing his face against the cold metal like a prisoner pleading for parole.

“Mom! Mom, please!” Daniel cried out, his voice breaking into ugly, ragged sobs. “Vanessa was just stressed from the pregnancy! She didn't mean what she said in the hospital! We’ll apologize! We’ll let you see your grandson whenever you want! Just call off the lawyers! Give us back our accounts!”

I stood my ground, my posture straight, my eyes locked onto his with unwavering clarity.

“You didn't call me mother when you stood by and watched your wife shove an elderly woman onto a hospital floor,” I said quietly, each word carrying the weight of twenty years of sacrifices he had chosen to erase. “You didn't care about family when you agreed that I was a ‘filthy old woman’ who didn't belong in the same room as your child.”

“I was tired! The company pressure—the round of funding—” Daniel babbled incoherently, grasping at straws that no longer existed.

“The company pressure?” I cut him off, my voice sharp as a diamond cutter. “Let me remind you who built that company, Daniel. When your father died, leaving us with twenty thousand dollars in debt and a pile of medical bills, I took three cleaning jobs. I sewed clothes by hand at night so you could wear a clean suit to your Ivy League interviews.”

Vanessa glared through her tears, her voice dripping with venom even in defeat. “You’re just a bitter, jealous old hag punishing us because we didn't kiss your feet!”

I turned my gaze slowly toward Vanessa, letting a faint, cold smile touch my lips.

“You called me filthy, Vanessa. You thought my old coat and my damp hair were signs of poverty. You didn't know that every single patent underpinning Valeon Technologies was filed under a provisional patent held by my maiden name—Eleanor Sterling—holding exclusive licensing rights that revert entirely to me if the operating entity breaches moral and ethical guidelines.”

Vanessa blinked, her jaw going slack. “Provisional patents... what are you talking about?”

“I am a forensic accountant, Vanessa,” I said softly. “Before I raised Daniel, I spent fifteen years auditing corporate fraud for Wall Street firms. Do you really think I would hand my entire life’s work to a reckless, ungrateful boy without building a trapdoor beneath his feet?”

Daniel staggered backward, hitting the sidewalk behind him. “You... you planned this?”

“I didn't plan for you to become a monster, Daniel,” I said, turning away from the gates and walking slowly back toward the driveway. “You chose that all on your own. I simply provided the consequence.”
