Chapter 7 - The Legal Summons
By the following week, the legal storm surrounding the dismantled Vance empire reached hurricane force.
Stripped of their corporate assets, evicted from their mansion, and unable to afford private legal representation, Daniel and Vanessa had retreated to a cramped, dingy motel room off the interstate—paid for by pawning Vanessa’s designer handbags for a fraction of their actual value.
On a rainy Thursday morning, a municipal bailiff knocked sharply on the door of Motel Room 14.
Daniel opened the door, unshaven, wearing a stained sweatshirt, looking like a ghost of the man who had once swaggered through boardrooms.
The bailiff handed him a thick stack of legal summonses.
“You’ve been served, Mr. Vance,” the bailiff said plainly, turning on his heel and walking away down the breezeway.
Daniel carried the papers inside and dropped them onto the sagging double bed. Vanessa rushed over, flipping through the pages with trembling hands.
“What is this?” she whispered in horror. “Civil lawsuits? Embezzlement investigation? Fraud charges filed by the state attorney general?”
“It’s the forensic audit report,” Daniel said, his voice entirely hollow as he stared blankly at the popcorn ceiling. “Mom’s firm audited every single corporate expense report from the last three years. She found the offshore accounts I set up to siphon R&D funds for our personal investments. She documented every single fraudulent wire transfer.”
Vanessa turned white as a sheet. “Does that mean... does that mean we’re facing prison time?”

“Federal white-collar indictments,” Daniel muttered, burying his face in his hands. “Maximum sentence is fifteen years.”
For the first time since they had met, Vanessa didn't scream, she didn't throw a tantrum, and she didn't blame anyone else. She simply sank down onto the edge of the cheap mattress, staring at the crying infant in the portable crib, realizing that their greed had not only destroyed their empire—it had destroyed their entire future.
