Chapter 5 - Out of the Ashes

The blacked-out Escalade convoy cut through the heavy midnight rain, racing north along Interstate 95 toward the coastal cliffs of Rhode Island.

Inside the spacious leather cabin of the lead vehicle, the air was warm and smelled of expensive leather and rain.

Lily was asleep in my lap, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket Roman had instructed his security team to bring from his private wardrobe. Her small face was resting comfortably against my knee, her fever completely gone.

I sat in the middle row, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and trousers that Roman’s female security officer, Sarah, had provided after throwing my filthy hospital uniform into the biohazard incinerator.

Across from me sat Roman Vale.

He looked less like a patient and more like a king returning to his domain. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the top two buttons open, revealing the thick bandage over his collarbone where the IV had been removed. His dark hair was brushed back, his sharp jawline shadowed by three weeks of dark stubble that gave him an air of dangerous, aristocratic elegance.

He was reviewing a series of encrypted documents on a tablet provided by Gideon, who sat in the front passenger seat.

“Victor has already called an emergency board meeting for nine a.m. tomorrow,” Gideon reported, leaning back between the seats. “He’s claiming you were kidnapped from the ICU by a rogue security element.”

Roman didn't look up from his tablet. “Let him talk. The more rope Victor gives himself, the sweeter the hanging will be.”

He set the tablet down and looked across the cabin at me.

His grey eyes softened instantly, taking in the exhausted lines on my face and the way I was holding Lily close to my chest as if she might disappear.

“You’re safe now, Elena,” Roman said softly, reaching across the gap to rest his warm palm over my hand. “My estate in Newport is built like an iron fortress. No one steps foot on that property without my personal clearance.”

“Mr. Vale...” I started, my voice trembling slightly. “I don't belong in your world. I’m a cleaner. Once Lily is completely better, I should take her home—”

“Home?” Roman interrupted, his brow furrowing slightly. “To the studio apartment where your landlord threatens to lock you out if you’re two days late on rent?”

I flushed with shame, looking down at my lap. “I heard what you said in the hospital room, Elena,” Roman added gently. “I heard you crying at three in the morning while you mopped the corridor. I heard you counting your last forty dollars trying to decide between buying medicine for Lily or paying for electricity.”

He leaned forward, his massive frame closing the distance between us until his face was inches from mine.

“No one who saves Roman Vale’s life will ever worry about rent, medicine, or safety ever again,” he declared with ironclad certainty. “From this night on, your only job is to live well. My wealth is your shield.”

I looked into his intense, beautiful eyes, feeling a sudden surge of emotion that swept away months of bone-deep exhaustion and loneliness.

“Why are you doing this for us?” I whispered.

Roman looked down at sleeping Lily, then back up into my eyes.

“Because when I was lying in that dark room, surrounded by vultures waiting for me to die, you and your daughter were the only light in the world,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a rough, intimate whisper. “And I never let go of my light.”

Twenty minutes later, the convoy turned off the coastal highway, passing through a massive set of iron gates guarded by armed security personnel and high-voltage security fencing.

The estate swept up before us—a magnificent stone manor perched on the edge of a dramatic ocean cliff, its high leaded windows glowing with warm, golden light against the stormy night sky.

As the Escalade came to a smooth stop beneath the covered stone portico, a team of servants and private medical staff stood waiting at the entrance doors.

Roman stepped out first, extending his hand to guide me down onto the dry flagstones.

Then, without asking, he reached into the car, gently lifted sleeping Lily into his broad arms, cradling her tiny body against his shoulder with practiced, tender grace.

I stood beside him under the grand archway, looking up at the sprawling mansion that felt more like a palace than a home.

“Welcome to the Vale Estate, Elena,” Roman whispered, wrapping his arm around my waist to lead us inside. “Welcome home.”
