Chapter 7 - The Night of the Storm

A month passed at the Vale Estate, and the dark horror of St. Jude’s Hospital began to fade like a bad dream.
Spring set in over the cliffs, bringing warm sea breezes, blooming coastal flowers, and blue skies.
Lily had transformed into a bright, chubby, radiant child who spent her mornings running through the estate’s manicured gardens with Roman’s two loyal German Shepherds, King and Caesar. She was being tutored by a top private teacher Roman had hired, her laughter filling the sprawling hallways that had once been as quiet as a tomb.
I found myself taking on a new role—not as a cleaner, but as the director of Roman’s newly established private charitable foundation, helping single mothers across the state pay for pediatric care and emergency housing.
Yet, despite the peace, the shadow of Roman’s world was never entirely gone.
On a stormy Thursday night, when heavy black clouds rolled over the Atlantic and lightning flashed across the sky, the estate’s main power grid suddenly flickered and died.
The emergency generators hummed to life three seconds later, casting soft red nightlights along the baseboards of the grand master wing.
I was sitting in the private library on the second floor, reading a storybook to Lily, who was fast asleep on the plush velvet sofa wrapped in her favorite fleece blanket.
Suddenly, King and Caesar, who were lying by the door, stood up, their dark fur standing on end, low growls vibrating in their chests.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
I stood up quietly, placing the book on the side table.
Through the thick rain battering the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I saw three dark figures dressed in black tactical gear scaling the stone balcony railing outside the library.
Intruders.
Victor Vance’s brother, Marcus—a ruthless mercenary leader who had escaped the federal round-up—had come to take revenge on Roman’s household!
I didn't panic. One month of living beside Roman Vale had taught me how to fight for what was mine.
I moved silently to the leather desk, pulled open the side drawer, and retrieved the sleek, silver 9mm handgun Roman had insisted I learn to use at his private firing range two weeks ago.
I racked the slide, chambering a round with a sharp, metallic CLICK.
“Stay behind the sofa, Lily,” I whispered fiercely.
The glass doors of the balcony were kicked inward with a deafening CRASH!
Rain and wind howling through the shattered glass, three armed men burst into the library!
“Where is the girl?!” the lead mercenary shouted, raising his submachine gun.
Before he could take two steps, I stepped out from behind the mahogany bookshelf, raised the handgun with both hands, and fired two shots straight into his tactical vest!
BANG! BANG!
The heavy impact knocked the leader back against the shattered doorframe.
The second mercenary growled, turning his weapon toward me, but before he could pull the trigger, the heavy double doors of the library were thrown off their hinges!
Roman Vale charged into the room like an unstoppable storm.
He didn't use a gun. He moved with pure, lethal physical dominance. He grabbed the second mercenary by his neck and threw him directly through the shattered glass window onto the rainy balcony forty feet above the ocean rocks below.
He turned on the third intruder, disarming him with a single brutal strike to his wrist, sweeping his legs out, and driving his heavy boot down into the man’s chest until the mercenary went limp on the Persian rug.
Silence returned to the room, saved for the sound of the howling storm outside.
Roman stood in the center of the library, his shirt soaked in rain, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a wild, protective fury that made him look like a god of war.
He turned his head, his eyes finding me standing beside the sofa, holding the silver handgun, my feet planted firm, protecting my child.
Roman let out a ragged breath, closing the distance between us in three long strides.
He snatched the gun safely from my hand, tossed it onto the desk, and pulled me violently into his arms, burying his face in the crook of my neck.
“Elena...” he rasped, his arms shaking as he held me so tight I could barely breathe. “My God, Elena...”
“I protected her, Roman,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his broad, wet shoulders, pressing my face against his warm neck. “I protected our daughter.”
Roman pulled back slightly, his hand rising to cup my cheek gently, his dark grey eyes shining with fierce, overwhelming emotion.

“You are the bravest, most extraordinary woman I have ever known,” Roman declared, his voice thick with deep, unshakeable love.
He leaned down and kissed me—a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that consumed every lingering fear of the dark night.
