Chapter 10 - Where the Heart Beats

One year later.

The summer sun hung high over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a shimmering sheet of gold across the rolling blue waves below the cliffside gardens of the Vale Estate.

A large white pavilion had been erected on the manicured green lawn, surrounded by thousands of blooming white roses and lavender.

Fifty close friends, trusted team members like Gideon and Sarah, and staff gathered around the central stone aisle.

At the altar stood Roman Vale.

He looked majestic in a dark blue bespoke suit, his posture tall, proud, and completely healed. He was staring down the aisle with an intensity that made the surrounding guests hold their breath.

The music began—a gentle, sweeping melody played by a live string quartet.

Walking down the aisle, carrying a basket of white rose petals, was four-year-old Lily. She looked like a little fairy in her fluffy dress, tossing petals with wild joy, running the last ten feet straight into Roman’s open arms.

Roman caught her effortlessly, lifting her onto his hip, kissing her cheek before setting her down beside Gideon, who served as his best man.

Then, every eye turned to the top of the stone steps.

I walked down the aisle, holding a bouquet of white lilies.

My wedding dress was a masterpiece of lace and silk, flowing behind me like a cloud. But the most beautiful thing I wore was the radiant, unshakeable happiness on my face.

As I reached the altar, Roman stepped forward, taking both of my hands into his.

His hands were warm, strong, and steady—the same hands that had locked around a nurse’s wrist a year ago to protect my daughter.

The minister spoke his words, but I barely heard them over the rushing sound of my own heart beating in perfect rhythm with the man standing before me.

“Roman Vale,” the minister asked, “do you take Elena Miller to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”

Roman looked down into my eyes, his voice deep, clear, and resonant as a church bell:

“I do. With my life, my soul, and my heart.”

“And do you, Elena Miller, take Roman Vale to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” I wept happily, squeezing his fingers tightly. “With all that I am.”

“By the power vested in me,” the minister smiled, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Roman didn't wait.

He pulled me into his arms, dipping me low over his knee, kissing me with a deep, passionate intensity that brought wild cheers and applause from everyone on the lawn.

Lily ran up, wrapping her small arms around both of our legs, shouting happily:

“Daddy! Mommy!”

Roman brought me back up, setting me on my feet, then reached down and scooped Lily into his arms, holding us both tight against his beating heart.

I laid my head against his broad chest, listening to the deep, steady, powerful rhythm beneath his shirt—the same heart that had almost stopped a year ago, but now beat with absolute life, love, and protection for the family he had built from the shadows.

The dark nights were gone forever.

And on the cliffs above the sea, our story had just begun.
