Chapter 3 - The Cold Footsteps of Truth

Gwen’s eyes scanned the handwritten lines, her hands shaking so hard she nearly dropped the paper.

“She’s… she’s lying!” Gwen sputtered, trying to summon her usual bossy tone, though her voice lacked conviction. “She made this up! She probably ran off with another man and wrote this to blame me!”

“The fire escape ladder is down, Gwen!” Liam screamed, grabbing his sister by her shoulders and shaking her. “There are muddy boot prints coming off the roof! They took her! They took my wife while I was sleeping in that bed because I believed you!”

Before Gwen could respond, her cell phone on the kitchen counter began to vibrate violently.

The screen lit up with an unlisted Petoskey area code.

Liam lunged for the phone, answering it before Gwen could move. He pressed it to his ear, his breathing ragged.

“Is this the Harrell residence?” a heavy, gravelly voice rasped through the speaker. The background was quiet, except for the faint sound of wind hitting sheet metal.

“Where is my wife?!” Liam bellowed. “If you touch a single hair on her head, I will hunt you down and—”

“Shut up and listen, boy,” the man interrupted, his tone chillingly calm. “Your sister owes forty-five grand. She’s been dodging our calls for six months, throwing us tiny scraps. Your wife was smart. She was trying to protect you. But $8,000 doesn't cover six months of accrued interest.”

Liam felt his knees buckle. He leaned against the counter for support. “Take me instead. Please. She has nothing to do with this!”

“We don't want you, Liam,” the voice replied flatly. “We have your wife. And right now, she’s sitting in an unheated cabin three miles from Lake Michigan, soaking wet in twenty-degree weather. If we don't receive the remaining $37,000 in liquid cash by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, you can collect what’s left of her from the lake shore.”

“Wait! Let me speak to her! Let me know she’s alive!” Liam begged.

Through the speaker, a faint, trembling female voice echoed in the background: “Liam… don't… don't give them anything…”

A harsh slap echoed across the line, followed by a muffled gasp of pain.

“Eight AM, Liam,” the man snapped. “No cops. If we see a single blue light on Highway 131, she goes into the water.”

The line went dead.

Liam turned slowly toward Gwen. His sister was cowering against the refrigerator, her hands covering her mouth.

“Thirty-seven thousand dollars,” Liam whispered, his voice dangerously low. “You let my wife take the blame for thirty-seven thousand dollars of your debt.”

“Liam, please… I got in over my head!” Gwen sobbed, falling to her knees on the kitchen tile, clutching at his pants leg. “I lost my savings at the casino in Turtle Creek! I borrowed from men I shouldn't have! They said they were going to come to my house in Petoskey! I was terrified!”

Liam looked down at his sister with pure disgust. The woman he had defended for years, the woman he had allowed to insult his wife at their own dinner table, was nothing more than a selfish, hollow coward.

He pulled his leg away, leaving her weeping on the floor.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed 911.

“Grand Rapids Police,” the operator answered. “What is your emergency?”

“My name is Liam Harrell,” he said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “My wife, Nora Harrell, was just abducted from our home by an extortion syndicate. And I need a tactical squad immediately.”
