Chapter 7 - The Shattered Ice

The high-caliber rifle shots from the police snipers hit Vance Cole in the chest before the sound even registered.
Vance collapsed backward into the snow, his gun discharging harmlessly into the air. His two enforcers panicked, turning to run toward the lake pier, but SWAT team members erupted from the snowbanks, tackling them into the ice.
“Clear! Clear!” voices shouted into the storm.
Liam didn't hear the tactical commands. He didn't see the flashbangs or the red laser sights dancing across the warehouse wall.
He sprinted across the snow, threw himself onto his knees beside Nora’s chair, and used his bare hands to rip at the coarse rope binding her wrists and ankles.
“Nora! Nora!” he cried, tearing his own heavy winter coat off his back and wrapping it tightly around her frozen shoulders.
Her body was ice cold. Her lips were a deep, bruised purple, her skin gray.
He pulled her limp body into his arms, holding her head against his chest, warming her cheeks with his bare hands, weeping uncontrollably.
“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry, Nora… please don't leave me… please God, don't take her…”
Nora looked up at him through heavy, frosted eyelashes. Her mind was foggy, drifting in the warm, dangerous euphoria of dying from hypothermia. But she felt the fierce, trembling heat of his body, the frantic beating of his heart against her ear, and the scalding wetness of his tears falling on her face.
“Liam…” she whispered, her voice like broken glass. “Why… why did you lock the door?”
The question hit Liam harder than any bullet ever could. It tore through his soul, leaving an open, bleeding wound that he knew would never fully heal.
“Because I was a fool,” he sobbed, pressing his forehead against hers. “Because I listened to venom instead of love. But I will spend every second of the rest of my life earning your forgiveness if you just keep breathing.”
Paramedics swarmed the pier, pushing Liam aside as they laid Nora onto a heated thermal stretcher, slipping an oxygen mask over her face and pumping heated IV fluids into her arm.
“We have a pulse, but it’s dangerously low!” the medic shouted. “Transporting to Petoskey Regional Emergency immediately!”
As they rolled Nora toward the ambulance, Detective Miller stepped up beside Liam, handing him his coat from the snow.
“Vance Cole is dead,” Miller said quietly. “His enforcers are in custody. And your sister is currently being booked at the county jail.”
Liam stared at the ambulance doors closing behind his wife. He didn't ask about Gwen. He didn't care if Gwen spent the rest of her life behind bars. The sister who had manipulated him for thirty years was dead to him.

“Is she going to live?” Liam asked, his voice hollow.
“She’s strong,” Miller said gently. “She survived four hours in twelve-degree weather out of sheer will. Now go be with her.”
