Chapter 6 - The Standoff at the Frozen Lake

The wind off Lake Michigan roared like a jet engine, carrying sharp shards of ice that sliced against Liam’s face as he walked down the narrow, snow-covered gravel road toward the fish processing plant.

Behind him, hidden in the treeline and snowbanks, fifteen SWAT officers moved like ghosts through the blizzard.

In front of him, the rusted corrugated iron of the warehouse loomed in the dark like a giant tomb.

Liam raised his hands above his head, his boots crunching loudly in the frozen snow.

“Vance!” Liam screamed into the howling gale. “I’m here! I’m Liam Harrell! I came alone!”

A heavy metal door at the side of the warehouse creaked open.

A tall man in a heavy fur-lined parka stepped out, holding a black semi-automatic pistol pointed directly at Liam’s chest. Behind him, two other men dragged a wooden chair out onto the snow.

Tied to the chair was Nora.

She was barely conscious. Her head hung limply against her chest, her pale skin translucent in the moonlight, her shivering having completely stopped—a fatal sign of late-stage hypothermia.

“Nora!” Liam cried out, taking a step forward.

“Step back!” Vance shouted, leveling the gun at Liam’s forehead. “Where’s the money, Harrell?!”

“I don't have the cash!” Liam yelled, keeping his hands high, stepping slowly into the open space between the warehouse and the pier. “My sister lied to you! She lied to me! But I own a commercial HVAC company in Grand Rapids! My equipment, my trucks, my accounts—they’re worth over two hundred thousand dollars! I will sign every bit of it over to you right now!”

Vance sneered, his eyes icy. “I can’t liquidate a company, you idiot! I needed cash!”

“Then take me!” Liam begged, dropping to his knees in the freezing snow, fifty feet from where Nora sat motionless. Tears ran down his face, freezing into ice on his cheeks. “Look at her! She’s dying! She never did anything to you! She spent her own savings to pay you off because she was trying to save my life!”

Nora’s eyelids fluttered weakly. Through the haze of severe cold, her blurred vision caught the shape of the man kneeling in the snow before her.

“Liam…” she gasped, her voice barely a breath against the roaring lake wind.

“I’m here, baby,” Liam sobbed, staring at her with pure, unadulterated devotion. “I’m so sorry. I was blind. I was a monster. Please… please stay awake. Look at me, Nora. Don't close your eyes!”

Vance looked between the kneeling husband and the dying wife, a cruel, bitter smirk spreading across his face.

“You brought the cops, didn't you, Liam?” Vance said softly, stepping closer to Nora, placing the cold barrel of his gun against her temple. “You thought you could play games with me. So now you get to watch her slip into the water.”

“No!” Liam screamed, lunging forward from his knees with every ounce of strength left in his body.
