Chapter 7 - The Unannounced Invasion

By 6:00 PM that evening, the rain had begun to fall over the city, slicking the streets with reflective dark sheets of water.

Emily sat in the spacious living room of her private penthouse suite located on the top floor of the Crestwood Executive Tower—a secure, highly exclusive residential building owned by the academy foundation.

Isla was curled up beside her on the plush velvet sofa, wearing warm flannel pajamas, drinking hot cocoa with marshmallow floaters, and watching an animated movie on the large television screen. Her hair was dry, styled in cute pigtails, and her cheeks had regained their healthy, rosy color.

"Mommy," Isla asked softly, looking up from her cocoa. "Are we safe here?"

Emily smiled tenderly, running her fingers through Isla's hair. "We are completely safe, my darling. No one can ever hurt you again."

Suddenly, Emily’s personal phone buzzed on the coffee table. The caller ID displayed: BEATRICE VANCE (MOTHER-IN-LAW).

Emily stared at the screen for a moment, her expression turning into a mask of calm indifference. She swiped to answer and placed the phone on speaker.

"Emily!" a harsh, raspy voice barked through the speaker. It was Beatrice, the arrogant matriarch of the Vance family, a woman who had treated Emily like dirt from the moment she married Richard. "Where on earth are you?! We are standing outside your pathetic suburban apartment building, and the landlord says you moved out months ago!"

"Good evening, Beatrice," Emily said smoothly, taking a sip of her chamomile tea. "I moved out because I purchased a new home. Why are you looking for me?"

"Don't you take that tone with me, girl!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice dripping with venom. "Helena told me everything! You dared to humiliate my grandson at Crestwood today! You dressed up like an official, spread disgusting lies about Helena, and had my family thrown out by security guards! Have you lost your mind?!"

"Helena told you a fairy tale, Beatrice," Emily replied coldly. "She physically assaulted a seven-year-old child in a public restroom, poured freezing water over her, and admitted to it on high-definition surveillance cameras with full audio. She brought shame upon herself."

"I don't care about a little water!" Beatrice roared, oblivious to basic humanity. "Isla is fine! Kids get wet! But Leo’s future at Crestwood was critical for our family’s social standing! You are Richard’s widow! Your duty is to serve this family, not ruin its reputation! You are going to call the Crestwood administration right now, withdraw your false accusations, and ensure Leo is admitted tomorrow morning!"

Emily let out a soft, elegant laugh—a sound so filled with disdain that it froze Beatrice on the other end of the line.

"My duty?" Emily echoed, her voice dropping an octave into pure, commanding authority. "Listen to me very carefully, Beatrice. I owe the Vance family nothing. When Richard died, you took his life insurance payout, stripped my daughter of her inheritance, and threw us out into the street. You called us trash."

"You were trash!" Beatrice spat back.

"Then remember this trash," Emily continued, her words sharp as diamonds. "I am not an employee at Crestwood. I am not a mid-level manager. I am Dr. Emily Vance, the Chief Executive Trustee and sole Principal of Crestwood Meridian Academy. I hold sixty percent of the voting shares in the Meridian Educational Foundation."

Silence heavy as lead hung on the phone line.

"What..." Beatrice faltered, her raspy voice suddenly trembling. "What nonsense are you talking about..."

"Furthermore," Emily added calmly, "your son Marcus's logistics firm operates on a fourteen-million-dollar commercial loan issued by Meridian Capital—a subsidiary of my trust. Ten minutes ago, due to severe ethical violations by executive family members, I signed the executive order calling in that loan for immediate full repayment within twenty-four hours."

A sharp gasp sounded in the background of the call—Marcus had been listening on speaker alongside his mother and wife.

"No!" Marcus's panicked voice broke through the line. "Emily! Wait! You can't call in fourteen million dollars! That will force Vance Logistics into immediate bankruptcy!"

May you like

"Then I suggest you start liquidating your assets, Marcus," Emily said softly. "Goodnight."

Emily ended the call, set her phone to 'Do Not Disturb', and took another slow sip of her tea. Beside her, Isla squeezed her hand, smiling softly.
