Chapter 4 - The Offer on the Table

Two days after graduation, the small house Joanna rented on the edge of town was quiet. The post-graduation storm seemed to have passed, but the tension hung heavy in the humid summer air.

Joanna was sitting at her small kitchen table, staring at a stack of university brochures. Simon had been accepted to Ohio State University with a partial scholarship for sports science. It was an incredible achievement, but the remaining tuition, housing, and meal plans were terrifyingly expensive. For months, Joanna had been figuring out how to take on a third job at a local bakery to bridge the gap.

A sharp knock at the front door broke the silence.

When Joanna opened it, she didn't find Denise or her parents. She found Jonathan Vance.

He stood on the small wooden porch wearing a tailored grey suit that looked entirely out of place against the faded paint of Joanna’s house. He looked composed, but his eyes held a seriousness that made Joanna instantly defensive.

"Ms. Miller," Jonathan said, bowing his head slightly. "May I have five minutes of your time? I promise I’m not here to cause a scene."

Joanna hesitated, then stepped aside. "Simon isn't here. He's at work at the auto shop."

"I know," Jonathan said, stepping into the modest living room. He looked around—at the framed photos of Simon at various ages lining the walls, the hand-knit blankets, the well-worn furniture that was spotless despite its age. "I actually came to speak with you."

Jonathan sat down at the wooden kitchen table. He placed a leather briefcase on his lap, opened it, and pulled out a thick folder.

"I owe you an apology," Jonathan began, his tone surprisingly earnest. "When Denise told me about her situation, she painted a very different picture. She told me she had sent money every month, that you refused to let her see Simon, and that you were holding him hostage out of jealousy. After what happened at the graduation... I hired a private investigator to check the records."

Joanna blinked, surprised. "You investigated us?"

"I am a businessman, Ms. Miller. I don't like being played," Jonathan said coolly. "My investigator found no record of financial transfers from Denise to you in nineteen years. He found record after record of your double shifts, your loan applications, and your sacrifices. I also discovered that Denise spent the last five years living in a luxury condo in Cleveland while you were taking out personal loans to pay for Simon’s dental braces."

Joanna pressed her lips together, feeling a sudden lump in her throat. For years, her parents had made her feel like she was dramatic for feeling exhausted. Hearing a total stranger validate her reality felt overwhelming.

"Why are you here, Mr. Vance?" she asked softly.

Jonathan leaned forward, placing a formal document on the table. "Denise is furious. She feels humiliated, and she is planning to launch a custody and back-asset lawsuit against you."

"A lawsuit?" Joanna gasped. "On what grounds? Simon is nineteen! He’s an adult!"

"She intends to claim that you illegally kept him from her, that you alienated his affection, and she wants to sue you for emotional damages—and force Simon into a legal declaration that invalidates your parental status so she can claim him as a dependent on her trust structures," Jonathan explained. "It’s messy, it’s frivolous, but she has found a shady lawyer who is willing to drag you through court just to bleed you financially."

Joanna’s hands began to shake. She didn't have money for a lawyer. A legal battle, even a frivolous one, would wipe out the small savings she had accumulated for Simon’s college deposit.

"However," Jonathan continued, watching her reaction carefully, "I am here to offer you an alternative. I have terminated my personal relationship with Denise. But I am a man who respects honor. What you did for that boy is extraordinary."

He slid a second document toward her. It was a cashier's check made out to Ohio State University for the full amount of Simon's four-year tuition, housing, and books.

"I will pay for Simon’s entire university education," Jonathan said smoothly. "Every single cent. In exchange, I want you to convince Simon to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a formal family waiver releasing Denise from any past claims of child support, and agreeing not to speak about this family matter publicly again. It protects my reputation, it protects Denise from a counter-suit for back child support, and it gives your son a clean, debt-free future."

Joanna looked at the check. It was everything she had prayed for—a guaranteed future for Simon, freedom from financial ruin, and an end to her crushing exhaustion.

All she had to do was tell Simon to sign a paper that let Denise walk away completely scot-free, pretending the whole thing never happened.

Just as Joanna raised her hand toward the document, the screen door slammed open. Simon stood in the doorway, covered in grease from his shift at the garage, his eyes burning with fury.

"Get out of our house," Simon said to Jonathan.
