Chapter 8 - The Secret Ally

Three weeks before the first court hearing, an unexpected package arrived at Attorney Marcus Vance’s office. It was addressed directly to Joanna Miller, marked Confidential.
Marcus called Joanna and Simon into her office immediately.
When Joanna opened the thick courier envelope, she found a USB drive and a short, handwritten note on heavy cream stationery:
Ms. Miller,
Justice should not be contingent on who has the louder voice. What you did for your son deserves protection, not persecution.
Attached are the financial records of Denise Miller’s various LLCs over the past seven years, which she hid from her tax filings, along with proof that she claimed Simon as a dependent on her tax returns in 2018, 2019, and 2021 to receive child tax credits—credits she never gave you a single dollar of.
Use this as you see fit.
— J.V.
Joanna looked up at Marcus, her eyes wide with shock. "Jonathan Vance?"
"Jonathan Vance," Marcus confirmed, a cold smile touching her lips as she plugged the USB drive into her computer. "He didn't just leave Denise—he audited her. This is tax fraud, Joanna. She was claiming Simon as a dependent on her federal tax returns while living in luxury, claiming child tax credits, and giving you nothing."
Simon leaned over the desk, reading the screen. "Is this illegal?"
"It’s heavily illegal," Marcus said, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "Claiming a dependent child when you don't provide more than fifty percent of their financial support is federal tax fraud. Denise didn't just abandon you, Simon—she used your existence to steal thousands of dollars from the government every year while your mother was working double shifts to buy your groceries."
"What does this mean for the custody and damage lawsuit she filed against us?" Simon asked.
"It means her lawsuit is officially dead," Marcus stated, shutting the laptop lid with a decisive clap. "And if she doesn't drop every single claim against Joanna by tomorrow morning, I’m taking these documents directly to the Internal Revenue Service and the county prosecutor."
That evening, Marcus sent a formal settlement demand to Denise’s attorney. The terms were simple:
Immediate and unconditional dismissal of all claims against Joanna Miller with prejudice.
A formal legal waiver surrendering any past, present, or future parental claims over Simon.
A signing of an official statement acknowledging Joanna Miller as Simon’s legal primary caregiver since infancy.
If Denise refused, Marcus promised to file the back child support lawsuit for $180,000 and submit the tax fraud evidence to federal authorities the following morning.
At 9:00 PM that night, Joanna’s phone rang. It was her father, George.
His voice sounded broken, completely stripped of its usual quiet authority. "Joanna... please. Don't send your sister to prison."
Joanna sat on her porch, watching the fireflies in the front yard. "Dad, she tried to ruin my life. She tried to take away my savings and call me an illegal kidnapper."

"She made a mistake, Joanna! She’s stupid, she’s selfish, we know that!" George sobbed openly into the receiver. "We spoiled her, okay? We were wrong! We thought you were strong and Denise was weak, so we always pushed you to give up more! But if she goes to federal prison, it will destroy us!"
"Then tell her to sign the paper, Dad," Joanna said softly, her heart aching for her broken family, but her resolve remaining rock solid. "She signs the waiver, she drops the lawsuit, and she leaves Simon and me alone forever. That is her only choice."
